Action Tutoring looks for passionate volunteer tutors to provide programmes in schools for pupils preparing for their GCSEs and SATs in English and maths.

Locations: Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Wirral, London, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Sussex.

Skills/Experience: Must have, or be studying for, a degree (in any subject) and have a B grade or above at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject you wish to tutor, or similar subjects. English or maths-related A Level subjects may include: history, politics or sociology (for English tutors) and physics, chemistry and economics (for maths tutors).

Commitment: A programme is usually between 8 to 10 weeks long (the equivalent of a school term), occasionally they can stretch to 12 weeks. The start and end dates will be communicated with you before you commit. A 'programme' means a term of tutoring at a partner school, with sessions at the same time and day each week.

Become a Birth Companion: all their birth support and most of their community support is completed by volunteers and they also staff a 24 hour birthing phone line. Those birth companions who work as prison visitors and antenatal teachers can claim a sessional rate or choose to volunteer.

Advice & Guidance volunteers lead one-to-one, advice and guidance appointments with clients and help them to navigate the UK job market and achieve their career aspirations. Support and training provided. English Volunteers provide help with language. Operations Volunteers assist the core operations of the charity.

Skills/Experience: For Advice & Guidance volunteers: previous UK work experience and knowledge of the UK job market. All sectors are welcome but useful experience includes: Freelance work, HR, construction, accountancy, law, NHS, engineering, teaching, business, apprenticeships. Computer literate (MS Word and Email) Fluent/native level of English. Beneficial: language skills (including Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Tigrinya, Amharic, Somali, Pashto, Tamil etc)

Commitment: Advice & Guidance volunteers: 3-6 months of 2-4 sessions per month, each running 10:00am - 5pm. English teacher volunteers: at least 2 courses with weekly 2 hour classes over 6-10 weeks.
