WORKAID

Mission:

Workaid enables young people in Africa to build sustainable livelihoods
Analysis by Giving is Great

Positives:

  • This charity has been successful in attracting volunteers relative to its size
  • The charity has received Government grants
  • There has been reasonable growth in spending over the last 3 years relative to the previous period
  • There have been no material income shortfalls in recent years
  • The Board appears to be well diversified in terms of age and gender and dynamic in terms of composition

Regulatory & Governance issues to consider:

  • Over half the Board have joined recently

Financial issues to consider:

  • A PartB annual return has not been required and so detailed financial information is not available from the online data
  • Income was lower than spending in the latest year
Comment by the Charity:
In line with good governance requirements, we introduced a rotation system for governors a few years ago. In light of the pandemic it has been hard to find replacements but we have now managed to do this so the normal rotation pattern will resume.

How do they operate?

The Hub

Objectives: Enables adults with learning difficulties to take part in volunteering and experience workshop activities.

Beneficiaries: Adults with learning difficulties

Location: Chesham, Buckinghamshire

Description: First opened in 2010, The Hub Workaid's UK project enables adults with learning difficulties to experience workshop activities.
Our specially designated workspace at our workshop in Chesham opens 2 days a week offering tailored sessions led by our experienced coordinator.
Activities range across all departments with practical tasks sorting, cleaning and fixing. All of which makes a valuable contribution to Workaids support in Africa. We will work in collaboration to design an adaptable program putting the needs, interests and suitability at the forefront.

Our work in Africa

Beneficiaries: Young people in Africa

Location: Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Sierra Leone

Description: Empowering young people in Africa to help themselves by developing the skills and knowledge needed to find gainful employment or start their own business. We do this by refurbishing donated tools to a high standard and shipping them to training centres and self-help organisations.
