BLOOD BIKES WALES

Mission:

Riding to save lives
Analysis by Giving is Great

Positives:

  • This charity has been very successful in attracting volunteers relative to its size
  • The charity has received modest backing from several prominent grant makers recently
  • Spending has increased over the last 3 years relative to the previous period
  • The Board appears to be dynamic in terms of composition

Regulatory & Governance issues to consider:

  • There are 13 trustees whereas the Charities Commission recommends a maximum of 12
  • The Board is predominantly male

Financial issues to consider:

  • A PartB annual return has not been required and so detailed financial information is not available from the online data
  • On several occasions in recent years income has been less than spending
Comment by the Charity:
It should be noted that the occasions where spending has been greater than income were during the COVID-19 pandemic. Much of our fundraising activities were curtailed at a time when demand greatly increased. Between February 2020 and September 2020 the number of calls and jobs received by the charity doubled every 2 months. A prudent financial reserves policy meant we were able to meet this demand with confidence. It should also be noted that during this period the charity received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service with special recognition for the contributions they made during the pandemic. The board is predominantly male but the biking community which attracts most of our volunteers is predominantly male, and of a certain age. This is something we constantly work to address by reaching out to other groups to achieve a better balance. This is a 100% volunteer organisation with no paid staff whatsoever.
