We will deliver a programme of non-contact boxing combined with mentoring and personal development to young people involved/at risk of involvement in racially motivated hate crime. Working closely with Avon and Somerset Police, we will identify and recruit young people, including those known to be perpetrators of hate crime. We will target areas in Bristol with a high proportion of racially motivated hate crimes - South Bristol, a majority white area, and the diverse communities of East/Central Bristol. We will adapt our proven delivery model to achieve the project’s aim. We will exploit boxing’s grittiness to attract our target group and use gaps between physical activities to mentor, educate, challenge and inspire. Our experienced coaches will facilitate fun yet demanding activities for young people to learn how to box safely, including speedball workouts, pad work and shadow boxing. In between the activities, our coaches will develop young people’s understanding of hate crime, explore and challenge their views and support them to take steps to becoming less vulnerable to engaging in hate crime, such as leaving a gang, making new friends or finding a job. We will run three different sessions from our inspirational gym in inner city Bristol: • Weekly 1:1 and small group (for 2-4 individuals) hour long sessions for 20 young people over 20 weeks • Half-day sessions three times per week during the school summer holiday • Half-day drop-in sessions from September to December 2019 Participants will also receive support to progress into further education, training and employment from our in-house careers specialist. Among other things, we will offer inspiring career workshops, skills for work workshops, work experience placements and workplace visits. Finally, we will transition young people to our weekly open access boxing sessions, where they will interact with a diverse group of young people.
