This project will include two areas of work; first, we will develop classroom materials aimed at discussing formal education pathways with migrants and refugees with lower English proficiency (a group particularly difficult to engage). These materials will be disseminated across our London network of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) partners and colleagues, with the aim of facilitating intra-classroom discussion on local education systems and options. This will be supplemented by four open, localised, language-accessible workshops for community members from migrant and refugee backgrounds, featuring speakers from local further education colleges and educational institutions open to our participants.
Second, this project will include a community outreach plan, facilitated by an EFA teacher-organiser, who will engage local AEB providers through a series of trainings to improve their engagement tools for working with migrants with lower levels of English.

This two-year project is for migrants living in Greenwich, London. It aims to improve their English language skills and their capacity to take action together on social issues in their lives around poor housing, poor working conditions, hate-crime and lack of migrants' rights. Participants will work on improving social inclusion in Greenwich, particularly as newly arrived refugees are being housed in the borough. Existing participants want to welcome newly arrived refugees into the weekly sessions. It provides weekly 'Learning and Action' sessions and four social trips. Participants aims to plan and take part in two collective actions.

An English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and housing advocacy project that supports immigrants to address and resolve housing issues, including overcrowding, difficulty accessing council housing and exploitation. English for Action (EFA) will run two ESOL courses each week and a monthly housing action group (HAG) for Lambeth resident adult migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum. The HAG is run in collaboration with Housing Action Southwark & Lambeth (HASL). HASL's caseworkers are borough residents with expertise in housing policy and practice and interacting with Southwark and Lambeth councils. ESOL classes increase migrants? capacity to advocate for their own wellbeing and improve their ability to engage with their children's education (75% of programme participants are parents of children under age 18). Each class is led by qualified ESOL teachers and the classes place students and their lived experiences at the heart of the curriculum, with the goal to build more confident, civically engaged residents. ESOL classes are a gateway to engagement with HASL and ESOL teachers support both ESOL and HAG.

Migrants and refugees, particularly those with English as an additional language, suffer disproportionately from the impact of poverty and inequality. These socio-economic circumstances negatively impact on wellbeing and health and exacerbate social isolation.
The programme will combine language learning with sport/physical activity sessions and support adult migrants and refugees to feel part of the London communities they live in. Through joining a series of weekly walking, cycling and language sessions, 80 people will build relationships across cultures and nationalities. The programme will be based in Tower Hamlets in parks, schools and community centres.

Between April 2017 and April 2020 Walcot funded EFA to teach English to parents in 4 Lambeth Primary schools (St Bede?s Primary and Junior School, Henry Cavendish and St Andrew?s) improving their ability to engage with the school and support their child's education. This project would allow EFA to provide additional services to 300 low income migrants across London (a third of whom would be Lambeth residents) and assist them to develop the skills needed to transition to ESOL distance-learning/remote access programmes. They will conduct weekly 1:1s with the most vulnerable students providing teaching support and signposting and produce a regular newsletter/guide for the wider migrant community in London helping them to understand the changing policy and guidance in relation to C19. EFA's ESOL teachers will also deliver digital skills training, focused on 50 of their students with the poorest literacy, IT skills and confidence. This group will be taught (1:1 or in small groups) how to effectively use Zoom, Skype, email, WhatsApp and other apps, with lessons being provided in their first language where necessary.

This two-year project built on existing activities run by the organisation, incorporating ideas developed by current participants. The project provided participatory ESOL classes for adult migrants who live in Bow area in Tower Hamlets and have limited English. In time the project helped to build the participants’ capacity to take collective action on problems they face around poor housing, poor working conditions, hate crime, and lack of migrants’ rights. Participants were involved in shaping and running the project through a participant-planning committee.
