Following the success of JAN Trust’s innovative counter-radicalisation initiative Web Guardians™, we will deliver a bespoke Web Guardians programme targeting demand expressed by the Bristol region to curb radicalisation (predominately Islamic) within specific and growing minority communities. After liaising with organisations and contacts working to tackle extremism and radicalisation in Bristol, we will deliver bespoke and tailored Web Guardians™ training courses, which work with Mothers and Women to understand what radicalisation and extremism is, and help them with practical skills and knowledge to prevent young families, children and their wider community from the risks posed by online extremist activity, grooming and other pathways to radicalisation (i.e. gangs). We will support at least 75 women and mothers predominantly from Somalian and Sudanese backgrounds and communities through a series of workshops designed to tackle the specific needs and cases of those communities. We will deliver 3 workshops per cohort x 3 cohorts which will total 9 workshops. Women will become better educated and empowered through a better understanding of what online radicalisation is, and how to support and protect their children to avoid becoming radicalised or involved with dangerous activity. The course will also help mothers, as role models in society to reach out to at-risk children and young people, providing them with counter-narratives led by the community. The project will lead to a greater community resilience and reduce the number of young people holding radicalist views, as well as significantly reducing the risk of harm extremism can cause to individuals and communities by drastically reducing the influence of extremist groups on target audiences. This in turn will lead to safer, more secure communities, increased harmony between diverse communities, and help to reduce the marginalisation of, and prejudices against minority communities.

I Can, You Can, will be JAN Trusts newest unique and ambitious pilot mentoring project for women facing multiple disadvantage and barriers to inclusion. We aim to help marginalised and oppressed women find empowerment, advice and new skills to improve their lives and that of their families. The pilot will facilitate mentoring relationships for two cohorts within 12 months, using peer-to-peer mentoring as a tool to assess needs, develop skills, and ultimately overcome multiple disadvantages, providing Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee women in Haringey with positive pathways and empowerment. Unlike traditional mentoring relationships, each participant will act as both mentor and mentee to one another, working through a series of toolsets over 6-months, drawing on shared experience and supported by Project Lead Officer/tutor.Users will receive training around mentoring. We will utilise the positive impact of mentoring as dialogue- both mentoring and receiving mentorship will improve skills, reduce barriers causing disadvantage, and encourage leadership.Mentor pairs will work through a 5-toolset programme:1. Being a Good Mentor- Mentor training and basic skills2. Getting to know You- Self and Mentor-led assessment, identifying barriers3. Building Confidence- Core/soft skills development- sharing knowledge, personal challenges4. Creating Opportunities- mentor-led learning, working to personal goals/outcomes5. Overcoming Barriers- longer period of personalised mentoring addressing specific barriers through mentoring. We will also establish a weekly peer support group, addressing new issues and discussions each week, open to all (not just mentor cohort). Led by the mentoring group with support from JAN Trust team.
