Comment: Growth has been stimulated by corporate backers providing funding for their campaigns and this base has enabled their innovative ideas to flourish. Their most significant collaborator has been Starbucks, and the Hubbub Foundation has been the beneficiary of their 5p cup charge which makes up a large proportion of their income. This funding is supported by their social enterprise, Hubbub Enterprise, that is wholly owned by the Hubbub Foundation and provides additional financial security.

How do they operate?

#InTheLoop Campaign

Objectives: To increase recycling on-the-go in cities around the UK

Beneficiaries: Communities around the UK

Description: The campaign introduces new recycling infrastructure across city centres in the UK by setting up high-profile communications and a strong, recognisable campaign brand. The Hubbub Foundation works collaboratively with partners across the cities, testing a range of solutions and interventions to encourage people to recycle while going about their daily lives. These take the form of bubble blowing bins, recycling reward machines and bright and bold posters that increase awareness of recycling opportunities on streets and managed public spaces.

FoodSavvy Campaign

Objectives: To help Norfolk and Suffolk Councils cut food waste in their counties

Beneficiaries: Communities in Norfolk and Suffolk counties

Description: The Hubbub Foundation is helping Norfolk and Suffolk Councils to introduce a series of county wide campaigns to combat food waste. These include campaigns ‘Pumpkin Rescue’, that uses the hook of wasted Halloween pumpkins to draw attention to food waste more widely; a Christmas advent calendar featuring tips on making the most of food over the holiday period; ‘Travellers Check’, which targets the waste created when people go on holiday; a ‘Food Savvy Quiz’ which asks users about their food habits and offers tailored advice based on their answers; and ‘Kitchen Love’ that introduced a community kitchen as a space to run cooking courses.

Community Fridge Network

Objectives: To provide a welcoming, social space where people can share surplus food within a local community

Beneficiaries: Communities around the UK

Description: The Community Fridge Network is a group of community fridge projects operating across the UK that are registered with The Hubbub Foundation. These community fridges have met certain health and safety standards, and are committed to supporting each other through shared learning and impact. Hubbub Foundation provides free support for any group wanting to set up and run a community fridge, enabling the concept to flourish and this network has brought together major retailers, grant giving bodies, local authorities and community groups to reduce business and domestic food waste and strengthen communities.

Food Connect Campaign

Objectives: To support the ‘final mile’ in food redistribution

Beneficiaries: Communities around the UK

Description: Food Connect is a zero emissions redistribution service run by Hubbub Foundation. They use a small fleet of e-cargo bikes and an e-vans to share surplus food from local businesses with the community. Food Connect provides a simpler donation experience for food businesses and significantly increases the quantity of food that can be collected. They offer a single point of contact for donations, and food is collected by a professional rider or driver who will take it to a local community fridge or community group where it will be shared quickly and safely with local residents.

Gift-a-Bundle Campaign

Objectives: To donate outgrown baby clothing and help support local families

Beneficiaries: Communities around the UK

Description: The Hubbub Foundation has partnered with Mothercare to set up collection points in selected stores across the UK so parents can pass on good quality, outgrown baby clothes to families who could benefit from the donations. The campaign also encourages parents to hold their own donation events and help other families and friends save money and reduce waste.

Community Calling Campaign

Objectives: To gift old smartphones to those in need

Beneficiaries: Those digitally isolated around the UK

Description: The campaign (built in partnership with O2) seeks to redistribute unwanted smart phones with a year of free data to people who were digitally isolated. People and organisations are asked to gift unused smartphones to those in need and these phones are digitally and physically cleaned before passing on for reuse to make sure they are safe and secure.

Comment: Listed above are a few examples of the range of campaigns the Hubbub Foundation have initiated. They continue to build new relationships with corporate partners each year that help develop new campaigns which raise environmental awareness and promote climate action.

Hubbub Enterprise is a social enterprise that is wholly owned by the Hubbub Foundation. Its aim is to take their best ideas and explore whether there is a commercial market that will take the idea to scale and generate new revenue for the charity. Their campaigns have included installing voting ashtrays called Ballot Bins that encourage people to tackle single-use plastic litter; introducing sustainability to employees of ambitious corporations through inspiring webinars and away day activities; litter picks to recycle oceans plastics aboard a 99% recycled plastic boat and delivery of other large-scale campaigns for the Hubbub Foundation such as #InTheLoop and #CupFund

Commentary: Building hundreds of corporate partnerships since founding, they have established a delivery model that has benefited their four core areas of food, fashion, homes and communities. Due to the nature of their innovative approach, impact in campaigns can vary but the ideas they promote have exposed millions to positive environmental interventions in the past and led to those ideas changing people’s actions.
