The Feast is committed to building stronger and more integrated communities, by investing in young people and giving them the resources and experiences that will enable them to live well together. We are seeking funding and in-kind resources to enable our staff and volunteers to reach more young people, running programmes that help them to grapple with their identity and the complex and emotive differences that surround them, and inviting them to participate in youth encounter programmes with peers they would not normally have an opportunity to connect with. To do this we want to secure and equip Development Workers in all four of our working UK locations, or what will become The Feast Hubs, who will lead local teams, nurture partnerships, recruit and support volunteers and raise capacity for the long term impact in their communities. This application acknowledges that our greatest need is to establish these key positions, with seed-funding and associated communications resources, that would enable them to raising ongoing profile, income and support to sustain the work. The Feast has teams located in four UK locations - Birmingham, Bradford and Keighley, Tower Hamlets and Luton. These communities share many challenges that come with significant cultural and faith diversity, such as different groups tending to congregate together around their similarities, leading to isolation and many growing up with parallel lives. Our work centres around young people who come from minority backgrounds, such as from South Asian or African and Caribbean ethnicities, and of the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu faiths. However as our approach is to connect with others who are different, we also need to network widely with majority communities such as white British and those who hold the Christian faith, or no faith at all. With Development Workers in place, leading local teams, The Feast will be able to establish the necessary profile and trust with community leaders which is vital in order to work with many different groups of young people. This would include winning faith and youth leaders to the benefits and importances of connecting outside their faith and culture, negotiating access to and delivering bespoke programmes for schools, raising new income from local donors and grant funders, coordinating and delivering youth work, and celebrating the stories of positive change. The Feast believes that by focusing on teenagers and enabling them to gain the skills and confidence to live well with difference at an early age, that when adults they will be much better prepared to face the challenges of diverse societies. We have also clearly seen the potency of working with young people to change their community. A young person who has been impacted by our programmes, with increased self-awareness and confidence in their identity, and having experienced a positive and uplifting encounter with peers from a different faith or cultures, leads directly to change in their families and faith group. Their personal stories are much more likely to confront prejudices and fears, especially when amplified by intentional sharing with, than outsiders speaking in.
