The Improving Lives Through Advice programme is made possible by a £30 million grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, thanks to National Lottery players. Working in partnership with the largest community funder in the UK, the Improving Lives Through Advice programme will ensure continued access to specialist social welfare legal advice to some of the most marginalised communities in England. This funding programme aims to transform lives, address systemic issues, and empower individuals, families, and communities in need by funding organisations working at the frontline. The programme will also fund organisations embedded within communities, recognising the role they often play in providing inclusive, trusted spaces supporting individuals, families, and communities to access advice services when they need it most.

This funding will enable Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit to support people from across Greater Manchester and the North-West to seek free legal immigration advice and representation. It will allow the charity to employ a social worker case worker and support worker. It will also support a portion of overheads and project costs. GMIAU combines their immigration expertise with holistic support for the most vulnerable to ensure their day-to-day needs are met. It receives over 5000 enquiries each year through their various referral mechanisms and they take on approximately 1000 legal cases each year. In addition the specialist support workers opened 400 new cases last year providing one-to-one support. 85% of their beneficiaries are from GM with the remainder elsewhere in the Northwest region.

Following work they did last year with TSIP (The Social Innovation Partnership) they have already identified the two key areas they need to develop to aid sustainability. Firstly the most significant gap in the organisation is their ability to communicate about the work they do and the people they work with. Immigration is a very political issue and there are complexities about the narratives and messages to promote. Basics for communication, including their website, are in place but there is so much more they have identified they need to do. Funding will allow them to develop all aspects of marketing and communications and to dig deeper into our work so they can better evaluate and demonst

Evidence suggests that the number of women in the UK who have experienced trafficking, domestic violence, rape and honour-based violence are rising, and this is reflected within Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit's casework. Through their ongoing provision of specialist legal advice to asylum-seekers and immigrants, they have identified increasing numbers of women in need of support to escape exploitation and violence. GMIAU will provide legal advice and advocacy to these women in informal settings such as children's centres, helping them to access appropriate support and become safer, while training to frontline professionals will improve identification of women at risk.
