We would like to offer food as part of this program as many of the men who access our services don’t have cooking facilities, live in hostels or find it harder to cook for themselves as their mental health worsens. The men’s mental health support group would provide a space for men to be vulnerable about their struggles with the support of experienced staff and create space for them to learn new skills. There will be a particular focus on activities that involve physical exercise as we know that exercise helps improve mental health and thus improve quality of life.

LEAF CREATIVE ARTS CIC This proposal will build on the success of a Dementia Friendly Stirchley campaign delivered by the CIC and funded, in 2020, by the Selly Oak Constituency Neighbourhood Network Scheme as part of its Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friendly Communities initiative. The campaign sought to spread awareness of the effects of living with dementia and complemented arts activities the CIC was already delivering with those living with dementia and their carers, including a Memory Café. Leaf Creative Arts is now seeking to deliver a six-month pilot in the Edgbaston ward providing a taster of the activities that were successfully received in Stirchley. Its aim is to engage people living with dementia, their carers and other isolated older adults over the age of 50. Activities delivered will include: - A Memory Cafe - a group working with historians and artists to encourage reminiscence and life story work, aimed at people living with dementia and their carers. - Creativity Club - dementia-friendly sessions encouraging participants to explore their creativity and learn new artistic skills. - Moving Memories Choir - a dementia-friendly singing group. - Good Vibrations- a group that encourages people to listen to music and also play musical instruments.

SHENCARE COMMUNTIY TRANSPORT (EDGBASTON) Charity is seeking funding to expand its provision in Edgbaston. Two Network lead officers have, with local stakeholders, identified new opportunities in the area for accessible transport. Following the pandemic, face to face services are picking up and older people are keen to return to activities, rebuild confidence and physical strength, and socialise with friends at day centres and luncheon clubs. Many refer to the absence of suitable transport and Shencare Community Transport is keen to respond to this gap. Applicant already has strong networks in Edgbaston and is in receipt of numerous requests for "new" journeys that are over and above those that it currently provides locally. In addition to enabling older people to retain their independence, such provision also provides respite to carers who would otherwise be transporting older family members to social activities or health appointments. Funding will enable the charity to work with up to 350 people across Edgbaston. It will take referrals from individuals and via local community organisations and ensure that appropriate risk assessments take place for all journeys. Applicant describes the benefits to clients of having contact with peers, attending advice and health appointments and activities to boost mental and physical health.

ST GERMAIN'S CHURCH St Germain's has been providing practical support to the local community throughout the pandemic. This initially took the form of food deliveries to the elderly who were isolating at home and a food bank, but has now grown and evolved into a café run in partnership with the Reqal Junk Food Project, and the provision of activities for those suffering from isolation and mental health issues. These include monthly walks and seated exercise classes. The applicant believes that local need for this combination of support is significant and is in the process of applying for long-term Lottery funding to secure it. There will be a shortfall in funding before the grant is awarded and the charity is seeking funding to act as a bridge to sustain these activities and specifically three month's salary for its Community Development Worker, who has been instrumental in setting up these activities and tailoring them to the needs of local older people. In addition to sustaining activities, the worker will also seek to expand elements in line with the interests of community members. Older people participating in this project will experience improved physical and mental wellbeing, increased connectness with others and an improved sense of belonging and community.

BROADENING CHOICES FOR OLDER PEOPLE Over a 12 month period, working in partnership with local organisation Fitnniss Wellbeing & Care (www.fitnniss.co.uk) we will offer the following range of different activities to those aged over 60: - Gentle exercise - Massage - African drumming - Art - Animal visits These will take place in the communal lounge at Edgcumbe Court and be open to tenants as well as older people in the local community. These activities will help to restore participants’ confidence in social situations, help them to learn new skills and increase their activity levels and mental wellbeing; they have been selected to cater for a range of interests.

BIRMINGHAM CENTRE FOR ART THERAPIES BCAT is currently working with seven established community organisations, which it refers to as “community assets” in Northfield, providing what it describes as “creative mental health support that fills the gap that assets cannot provide themselves for various reasons.” It is seeking funding to continue to provide such activities to older people accessing the seven organisations and to explore partnerships with new settings in Northfield. Support will be delivered in the form of creative community workshops which assist participants in discussing and understanding differences, building skills and friendships and gaining valuable opportunities to socialise, be creative and have fun with new art therapies. Applicant describes benefits to existing older participants which include improved mobility and mental health, self-esteem and confidence. Such activities can also be beneficial to older participants who are recovering from, or living with, health conditions such as Alzheimer’s which affect their verbal communication creating opportunity to be creative without using words. Applicant reports that the latter can aid in the recovery process and contributes to the prolonged independence of many participants. Existing community assets involved in this project include Longbridge Day Centre and Chatham Place, both of which expressed positive views on the contribution the creative provision gave to their beneficiaries.
29/03/2022 £9,506
SPRING TO LIFE Applicant will use funding to deliver ten ‘meet and chat’ wellbeing sessions aimed in older people in the Northfield constituency who are experiencing stress, anxiety and/or low mood and who believe they would benefit from the chance to connect and socialise with peers. Sessions will be led by therapists who will encourage participants to share concerns or personal difficulties in a safe environment. Sessions will integrate activities such as creative writing, stories for well-being, and a psycho-educational component where participants can take home with them key methods and practices for managing low level mental health difficulties. To complement the impact of these groups, participants will also be offered the opportunity to take part in a set of walking in nature sessions which will run in parallel with the meet up and chat sessions. It is hoped that the latter will support older participants to become more physically active, but also embed those new social connections, through walks in nature with others. This element also offers participants to chance to sustain relationships via walking, after the structured therapeutic sessions have concluded.
29/03/2022 £4,340
ARTS 50 ALIVE NETWORK Applicant will use funding to sustain existing intergenerational work to bring older and young people together. Arts 50 Alive was recently successful in receiving Commonwealth Games funding – via both the Legacy "We made Birmingham" and the Creative City Programme. This will pay for artists to work with older and younger people to oversee the production of artwork. Funding will also be used to provide young people with journalism training which they can use to talk to older people from Arts 50 Alive’s network. Applicant has confirmed that NNS funding will enable it to sustain similar activities to these, whilst also bringing the generations together via music, gardening, food and conversation. Funding is requested to engage a freelance worker (£5200 over 12 months) who will develop activities through feedback from members. Budget is also requested for sessional workers such as artists and individuals experienced at providing fitness activities for older clients. Further budget has been allocated for room hire, minibus costs, refreshments and the production of flyers. Applicant reports that this funding will enable older people, many of whom have become afraid to go out due to the pandemic, to leave their homes and join in a variety of activities which they might not normally be able to access. Older participants will build new relationships and experience reduced isolation and loneliness. Arts 50 Alive believes that the chance to talk and interact with others especially young people will improve the quality of life of all participants.

KINGS NORTON SENIORS he Centre from which Kings Norton Seniors Club operates has recently re-opened and beneficiaries are now reengaging, in a face-to-face capacity, with the group, which is a significant step for many. Applicant is seeking funding to continue to employ the freelance worker who coordinated much of its pandemic support. In addition to making regular phone calls, this individual sent out letters and quizzes, and delivered gifts and treats to boost mental health and reduce isolation. This worker will now use their skills to deliver a package of activities from the club’s centre, for up to 70 older people, on a weekly basis. Activities will include armchair Tai Chi and keep fit, music sessions and trips out, all of which will boost older participant’s self-confidence, physical health, connections with each other and also with the wider community. Kings Norton Senior’s club also reports that this individual will endeavour to deliver some intergenerational activities to further boost wellbeing. The pandemic has been an incredibly stressful and isolating experience for many of its members, and activities have been designed with an aim of reducing anxiety and improving both mental and physical health of participants. This support will also reinvigorate what the applicant describes as a “well-loved and established group which supports many older people from the local community of Kings Norton and nearby neighbourhoods.”

BIRMINGHAM IRISH ASSOCIATION ver the last two years, the Birmingham Irish Association has supported 220 people from the Traveller community, living in Birmingham. Applicant reports that it undertakes ongoing consultation via verbal feedback with this population and has designed this proposal to reflect comments on additional support needed. The charity is seeking to employ a Traveller Support Worker to deliver specialised support to this population in Birmingham. Working across a variety of locations to ensure accessibility, this Worker will provide advice and support on housing, income maximisation, benefits, debt and healthcare. The applicant reports that the latter in particular has been an issue during the pandemic, with many in the Traveller community receiving misinformation regarding COVID-19 and how to prevent themselves catching it. In addition to providing direct advice, the Worker will also seek to link GPs, healthcare professionals and other agencies working in areas such as domestic violence, with the Traveller community. All advice provided will be culturally sensitive and the Worker will act as a bridge to improve relations between different Traveller communities within Birmingham, and also with the non-Traveller community across the city. An additional piece of support will be to advise support services who lack confidence in interacting and working with Traveller community in how to deliver culturally competent support to this population.

BIRMINGHAM LGBT CENTRE pplicant writes that this project has been developed as a response to the aims of the citywide NNS funding programme. Building on the success of an existing Ageing Better programme, Birmingham LGBT will engage a part time worker to provide capacity building support to 15 LGBTQ+ peer led support and social groups across the city. These groups are typically unfunded small grassroots community groups that have been set up by volunteers to bring LGBTQ+ communities together and address need that has not been met by mainstream agencies. Birmingham LGBT describes such groups as diverse and community based, and able to offer culturally competent support to many members of the city’s LGBTQ+ population, who would otherwise be isolated. Assistance to these groups will include support with constituting, setting up a bank account, fundraising, health and safety, and support with governance and organisational policies and procedures. Birmingham LGBT will also provide support to access meeting spaces, and marketing and promotion of events and activities. It will also deliver several networking and training days which will provide an opportunity for these informal groups to network with each other and with other community providers. The latter in particular will help the groups to improve their visibility and ability to signpost LGBTQ people to relevant services.

To address this, DeafPLUS will deliver one to one support to eight families over blocks of six weeks. Activities will be tailored to the needs of the individual families, most of whom will be from Black, Asian and Minority ethnic populations, but are likely to encompass some element of overcoming communication barriers, understanding deaf culture and breaking down cultural barriers in relation to deafness.

REDEEMER CHURCH Applicant reports that over the course of the pandemic it has, in partnership with Northfield Neighbourhood Network Scheme, increased its activities and support for over 50's in the local area. This has included provision of a coffee morning, which now also offers food via an arrangement with Foodcycle, a clothes bank, a barbers and community activities, and the development of a mobile coffee morning, which connects with new, often socially isolated individuals on a weekly basis. Since establishing the latter, the charity has had requests from other organisations, adult social care and friends and relatives to visit specific people. The charity has also been successful in gaining funding to run community daytrips for older people, many of whom are on low incomes, have experienced loneliness and benefit significantly from the chance to build friendships and support networks. Applicant is seeking to maintain these activities, but also to expand its regular coffee morning and mobile coffee morning into the estate around Culmington Hall. It will also continue to deliver and promote its Citizen Enablement Fund which provides over 50s with various household items and help, ranging from white goods, to furniture provision to referrals to food banks. Many older people in the local community do not have internet access and are unaware of the support available to them. Redeemer Church acts as a connector to these services by building contact and trust with older residents, and also reduces isolation by bringing older people together with those in similar situations.

SHENCARE COMMUNITY TRANSPORT (NORTHFIELD) Community partners report ongoing challenges in accessing suitable transport provision for clients, which is critical in ensuring that those who are often isolated, may have mobility issues and/or be living on low incomes can meet friends, engage with advice services and access social and leisure activities to support physical and mental wellbeing. Such provision sustains independence and, particularly in the case of older people, enables many to continue to live in their own home. Shencare Community Transport reports that it is in receipt of numerous requests for "new" journeys from community organisations working with older people, which are above those it can currently provide. Funding support would enable it to meet this demand and to enable older clients to get out and access community activities and health appointments with significant benefits to their health and happiness.
