The Release Young Carer's Project will provide targeted support to 216 young carers aged 14-18 years old across Birmingham. Support will include 1-2-1 Life Coaching that will be tailored to meet the young carers needs, helping them to set life and career goals, to develop coping strategies, and to help the overcome barriers to their ambitions. The project will also work with 27 schools to to raise awareness of young carers needs, helping schools to better identify young carers and provide earlier intervention. The majority of Young Carers are living in poverty, and 'hidden' from services. A grant will support the salaries of 3 Specialist Youth Workers, plus delivery and organisational costs.

The extension to the Virtually Minded project will develop the delivery method to better engage and support 10-12 year olds from the Falcon Lodge estate, Sutton Coldfield and Conker Island estate, Kingstanding. A mobile youth bus will visit the estates and weekly sessions will encourage small groups of young men to participate in range of activities. The young men will be supported to better understand mental health, and encouraged to develop their own social media and Comic-Con campaign helping them to develop a range of practical and social skills. A grant will support the costs of youth workers, consultation and delivery, plus a contribution to management and organisational overheads.

Virtually Minded will increase engagement in social action by reluctant young men aged 11-18 in 3 of the areas of North Birmingham with the highest rates of child poverty.Engaging young men through detached youth work, the project will support them to improve their aspirations, gain skills & experience. It will do this through activities which use comic book art and virtual heroes to raise awareness of Male Mental Health, including “virtual” campaigns; “virtual” peer mentoring and local events. The grant will pay for youth workers, the costs of the youth bus used to engage young people, activity and training costs and equipment.

Sutton Coldfield YMCA actively seeks out young carers aged between 11-24 in North Birmingham and provides a holistic programme of support that targets the most socially isolated young carers and keeps them in their family setting, builds personal coping skills for the carer to deal with their caring responsibilities, reducing the risk of crisis situations for the family, and help carers to identify and achieve personal goals. A grant will support the running of a mentoring programme and life coach; peer support and respite activities such as a regular youth club, residential, visits and trips.

Youth workers will provide much-needed support via home visits, activities and support groups to help develop a quality standard to ensure schools can also provide inclusive support to young carers.
