....more
FGM is a human rights violation and affects girls and women, not only immediately after they have been mutilated but for the rest of their lives. FGM is very damaging and harmful to women as well as an issue that lies firmly at the heart of the community we serve. From one to one and group support survivors have reported the damage: physical, psychological and social that the practice has inflicted on their daily life, From feedback received the physical wounds may have healed but psychological trauma go on to haunt them for a lifetime. While a lot of efforts have been done to prevent FGM to young girls there is no support available for Survivors with very limited clinics around the UK, outside London, there is unfortunately little support available and in Salford where such services do not exist survivors face significantly more barriers . These women welcome opportunity of cultural appropriate services to emotionally support them. FGM survivors were told and it is engraved into their psyche that FGM was done out of love and they are led to believe that it is done for their own benefit and now offering them the emotional support they need is a strong message that what was done is wrong so that they know they are not alone especially with the irreversible damage caused by the practice. Therefore, Women survivors will report: 1. Improved Skills and confidence to speak out against the practice, confidence to seek help and improve their life skills through stone carving with English and ICT. 2. Improved emotional wellbeing with the right support through 1:1 and group sessions 3. Improved social networks where they'll meet people in the same situation, make friends and feel supported to break their isolation.
