GATE Herts is a Comunity Led Organisation with the aim of improving the quality of life for Gypsy, Roma, Traveller communities. We work in partnership to address the issues which affect our accommodation, health, educations, employment and our circumstances within the UK's society. We develop the capacity and skills of our GRT Individuals.

There is a narrative around fertility ....more Although the take up for the vaccine has been encouraging in the older cohort, there is a committed group of anti vax supporters within the younger generations. There is a narrative around fertility circulating within the communities and indeed wider society, family and children are very important to GRT people, and fertility issues are often a source of stigma, GATE is offering an alternative narrative and promoting reputable sources of legitimate information such as GOV. and NHS sites. GATE has a healthy following on most social media platforms and will continue to guide our communities to these such sites. As the country begins to open up more the messages and guidelines are becoming increasingly confusing, such as it will not be a legal requirement to wear a face mask but you are advised to do so. GATE proposes to offer clarity and consistency to our communities in our messaging, we propose to break down the guidelines into easy read posts, we propose to debunk any ant vax narratives with clear concise easy to follow facts. The younger generations need gentle guidance and prompting to book a vaccine appointment, GATE will reiterate the need to vacant oneself to protect others.

There are increased challenges for those living on sites, including accessibility of gas bottles, sewerage and obtaining fresh water. Those living on unauthorised sites experience the most problems, especially in accessing suitable sanitation and waste disposal. Difficulties keeping up to date on changing public health messages, due to literacy or digital exclusion issues as well as fear of engagement with authorities and challenges in registering with GPs a higher number of underlying health conditions, resulting in more serious illness, higher risks of poor mental health and suicide.

Objectives

1. TO DEVELOP THE CAPACITY AND SKILLS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED GYPSY, ROMA AND TRAVELLER COMMUNITIES BOTH IN HERTFORDSHIRE AND MORE WIDELY IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY ARE BETTER ABLE TO IDENTIFY, AND HELP MEET, THEIR NEEDS AND TO PARTICIPATE MORE FULLY IN SOCIETY. 2. TO PROMOTE EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND RACIAL HARMONY FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT BY FOR EXAMPLE: A) CONDUCTING OR COMMISSIONING RESEARCH IN REGARD TO THE INEQUALITY AND DISCRIMINATION ISSUES EXPERIENCED BY MEMBERS OF THE GYPSY, ROMA AND TRAVELLER COMMUNITIES; B) RAISING UNDERSTANDING AND AWARENESS ABOUT THE INEQUALITY AND DISCRIMINATION EXPERIENCED BY MEMBERS OF THE GYPSY, ROMA AND TRAVELLER COMMUNITIES; AND C) PROMOTING ACTIVITIES TO FOSTER UNDERSTANDING. 3. TO PROMOTE SOCIAL INCLUSION FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT BY WORKING WITH PEOPLE IN HERTFORDSHIRE AND MORE WIDELY WHO ARE SOCIALLY EXCLUDED ON THE GROUNDS OF THEIR ETHNICITY, IN PARTICULAR, MEMBERS OF THE GYPSY, ROMA AND TRAVELLER COMMUNITIES, TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF SUCH PEOPLE AND ASSIST THEM TO INTEGRATE INTO SOCIETY BY: A) ADDRESSING THE INEQUALITIES AND DISCRIMINATION FROM WHICH THEY SUFFER; B) PROVIDING A LOCAL NETWORK GROUP THAT ENCOURAGES AND ENABLES MEMBERS OF THE GYPSY, ROMA AND TRAVELLER COMMUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH THE WIDER COMMUNITY; AND C) INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEMBERS OF THE GYPSY, ROMA AND TRAVELLER COMMUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH SERVICE PROVIDERS, IN ORDER THAT PROVIDERS CAN ADAPT SERVICES TO BETTER MEET THE NEEDS OF THOSE COMMUNITIES.
