The funding will be used to to deliver a training and education project which will develop robust partnerships with statutory/professional services and support people experiencing honour-based practices in Merseyside and Cheshire. Savera UK is a Merseyside-based national charity working to end ‘honour’-based abuse (HBA) and harmful practices and other culturally specific abuse. It aims to eliminate all such practices for good through safeguarding advocacy education and engagement awareness-raising and campaigning for policy attitude and behaviour change. It also provides direct intervention services to survivors and those at risk regardless of age culture sexuality gender or ethnicity. Through this new project the aim is to improve and strengthen Savera’s capacity to reach educate train and support two key target groups - professionals and young people - and equip them with the information and practical tools they need to better respond to ‘honour’- base abuse.

Smallwood provides a block grant of £90,000, a percentage of which the organisation uses to run the programme (shown here), and the remainder is awarded as hardship grants to individual women 18+, who are further supported by the organisation's specialist services. Percentages are agreed with Smallwood in advance.

As a result of Savera identifying an increase in the number of cases of domestic abuse reported to the police from within the Merseyside BAMER communities they will be expanding their support for women at crisis point. This will include 1-2-1 services to help deal with the immediate impact of domestic abuse or harmful practice along with continued support. Support teams will be trained on cultural awareness, understanding abuse and harmful practice to awareness among young people in schools and communities.

Towards establishing a BAME-specific, culturally sensitive domestic abuse service specialising in forced marriage, 'honour' based violence and female genital mutilation.
