The impact for mothers will be increased confidence, self esteem and emotional well-being which results in reduced feelings of isolation. They will attend other baby groups and services they did not have the confidence or information to access earlier. For those on long waiting lists to access counselling or therapies the group bridges the gap, ensuring their mental health does not decline further. Our evidence tells us that women need a nurturing, in a dark room with little social contact and now attends 3 groups a week delighting in watching her child socialise with others. Another mother came to understand the importance of self care which has helped her to reduce her high anxiety over babys safety. One ex-group mother now serves as a trustee on our committee. The impact on the wider community will be a reduction to referrals into more costly statutory services. More local groups will be supported and accessed. More women will build support networks and feel empowered to tackle other issues in their lives. They will enjoy being a new mother and have a happy baby!

The Mums in Mind Group helps new mothers in North Somerset to improve their confidence, build self-esteem and reduce isolation allowing them to access services and groups in their community. Support is offered to mothers experiencing new or existing mental health issues which may be caused or exacerbated by the transition into motherhood at a time when they are facing significant disadvantages in their life such as poverty, domestic abuse and bereavement.Weekly peer to peer support groups will be held for mums with babies under one. These small groups will be a safe, non-judgemental space in which they can make friends, share experiences and enjoy mindful craft or selfcare activities. Each group will be supported by the Home-Start Perinatal Coordinator and a group of trained peer support volunteers who help transport mums to group, run the baby play corner and contribute to discussions. Previous group mothers will be invited to talk about their journeys to help normalise experiences and shine a light on recovery. We gather feedback at every session to help the mothers direct the focus of subsequent groups.Knowing they are not alone in how they feel, they are able to support each other on social media, meet up for coffee or in other groups and access new services once the group has ended. These mothers build confidence, resilience and begin to enjoy being a mother. The groups will be held termly and rotate across North Somerset to ensure accessibility for mothers living in rural areas.
