Options in Life was established in 2011 by members of our community who were passionate about finding solutions to the segregation of our community’s learning disabled. We responded to this issue by working to develop a service which would help people with learning disabilities build the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to integrate more fully with mainstream society. Our efforts came to fruition in February 2013 with the launch of our social inclusion and skills development program. Our program currently runs two days each week and involves supporting our participants through a diverse program of confidence and skill-building activities. The project we hope to secure funding to help support is the expansion of our current service from two days to three days each week so that we can meet with increases in demand. The reason our service has quickly become so popular is because we operate slightly differently from most other disability service providers in our area. We do not own premises or operate from a central building, instead our work takes place out in the community, allowing us to focus all of our funds directly on the service that we provide. We use a group model of support rather than the more common “one-to-one” model of support which we believe allows us to achieve higher social outcomes. We have also established strong relationships with local service providers which has enabled us to develop quite an extraordinary activity portfolio which is unlike any other we have come across. People with learning disabilities attending our service will build confidence and team-working abilities as they learn to rock-climb, drive tanks or kayak. The will learn new skills through specialist workshops such as this years’ maritime skills course and they will gain work experience which, this year, took place in Ikea.
