The main outlay for the project, behind salary, is the cost of the hire of equipment and payment of qualified lifeguards and surf coaches, using Surfing England accredited surf schools. In North Yorkshire, they currently work with all 3 surf schools in Scarborough, who offer their services at less than half of what they could charge on the open market, to help support the charity. However, this amount still comes to £10020 for one year worth of surf therapy and surf club sessions.

The Wave Project is using a £199,728 grant for their 'Improving Wellbeing in Young People through Surfing' project which will run over the next four years. The project aims to improve the wellbeing of 60 young people per year, aged 8-18 from the Causeway Coast and Glens and Derry and Strabane council areas who are vulnerable, isolated and experiencing mental health issues through surf therapy. It will bring 120 volunteer mentors from across Northern Ireland together to support young people to feel more positive and emotionally resilient by taking them surfing at two beaches in the Portrush area - West Strand and Benone. The young people will learn how to surf, practice their skills regularly and then later become volunteer surf mentors.

The Wave Project supports children suffering from emotional trauma and mental health issues by using surfing to improve confidence, help them make friends and develop core life skills such as communication and team work. Overview
The Wave Project uses surfing as a therapeutic tool to improve the mental health and well-being of young people. Through surf therapy programmes, they aim to reduce anxiety, boost self-esteem, and promote resilience in beneficiaries.Effectiveness of their surf therapy course, measured via questionnaires immediately after completion, has shown significant improvements in young people’s confidence and ability to connect in social settings. This has prompted continuing commitment of schools, NHS, social services, and other referrers to pay fees for each participants inclusion.
A new strategy was introduced in 2024 which will be supported by the recruitment of new CEO, Ramon Van De Velde who has plans to grow delivery, funding and programme impacts.
