The organisation are using the funding to continue and develop their Accommodation for Work (AFW) Project over the next three years which provides bed spaces in houses situated across Brighton and Hove. Each house is fully furnished and residents have their own rooms and shared bathroom lounge and kitchen facilities. The safe space and support enable people to recover from the trauma and stress of rough sleeping to get healthy and to remain in work or to prepare for employment or training.

The project involves refurbishment of four properties that make up BHT Young Peoples Service in Hastings. All 33 (31 existing/ 2 newly created) clients living in the properties (and their children in some cases) will benefit from the improvements, as will clients coming into the service in the future. The service comprises three houses of shared accommodation and one block of 12 self-contained flats for young people aged 16-25 who are care leavers or homeless. The refurbishment work will make the buildings fit for purpose, will create two new bed spaces, new IT and learning suites, a family play area, an outdoor space for health and wellbeing activities, improved communal areas and laundry and living facilities. All clients are allocated a dedicated support worker and are supported to engage in the Pathway to Independence programme which includes budgeting, work and learning and health and well being.

This project aims to enable disadvantaged people to secure and sustain accommodation in the private rented sector (PRS), and build the confidence of private landlords to let affordable properties to groups on low incomes. Beneficiaries will be assigned a personalised plan to help them meet the requirements of private landlords. Sessions will cover sharing accommodation (under 35's are only entitled to local housing allowance at the shared accommodation rate) and how to find other sharers for example.

Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) will provide a motivational educational service to vulnerable women at risk of economic exclusion. The project will be developed in line with tenancy trends, creating a 'Sharers' Network' to counter the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) which takes room occupancy into account. An interview will establish people's needs, after which a training course will be delivered. The project will provide ongoing support, including assistance mediating with landlords and helping with deposits/crisis loans.

Through a training course and peer support sessions, beneficiaries will develop a portfolio of qualities designed to meet the requirements of landlords. These include; understanding the responsibilities of being a tenant, security, reporting repairs and the upkeep of premises; demonstrating positive behaviour and the ability to pay rent.
