Midaye is a BME migrant organisation that?s deeply embedded in, and led by, our community, who feel ownership and pride in what we collectively create. Our services are delivered in a way that empowers ?participants drive change for themselves and their communities, which encourages them to engage.
Mental health problems are dangerously high in our communities. Migrant women carry deep scars of war, forced migration and FGM, now combined with the strain of extreme poverty and isolation, day-to-day experience of systemic racism, and fear for their children?s future. But the subject of mental health carries many taboos. Acknowledging problems and seeking help are acts of great bravery, which come to nothing when services are inaccessible or inappropriate in their response.
Our community approach to mental health is client-led and uses culturally appropriate solutions, which greatly improves outcomes. We support women to prioritise emotional wellbeing; tackling mental health stigmas to join our helping community of peer support. Through a virtuous circle, women who were isolated, afraid and held hostage by mental ill-health are now volunteering on mental health, speaking in public meetings, and voicing how to support the mental health of their community.
We have earned the trust of our community because we deliver. And we have built a strong reputation with a range of partners -statutory and VCS alike -for our experienced staff, effective model and unparalleled reach into vulnerable BME migrant groups ? and our effective advocacy for their needs.
We want to transform the effectiveness of mental health services for BME migrant women by action on three connected fronts. We will refine and evidence our community counselling model; influence our community to develop new attitudes to mental health; and work with statutory and VCS providers and commissioners to support them in developing good practice through rethinking their approach.

COVID19 related funding. The project, Midaye will provide a multilingual gateway service on health information and healthcare access to isolated BME migrants in NW London to support better outcomes for the mental wellbeing and physical health of our communities in the wake of Covid-19. We will build from our existing engagement with BME migrants and utilise the trusted position we hold in our communities as a grassroots community-led organisation. We will use our existing network and engage partners – including, e.g., IAPTS; local GP surgeries; and LA Public Health departments – to help isolated and hard-to-reach individuals struggling with complex health needs, which have been further exacerbated by Covid-19. We will provide 3 drop-in clinics/week to 288 clients over the year. Working in 6 languages, we will provide information, advocacy, language support and referrals into our own specialist services and other services, including primary care pathways. We will 1) work with clients on primary care access: understanding doctor’s advice/treatment plans; and overcoming language barriers to, e.g., make appointments and communicate with healthcare professionals including pharmacists, nurses, etc., 2) refer clients to other health related services provided by Midaye (e.g. FGM, in partnership with St Mary’s;

In 2013, Midaye identified the need for more in-depth work on health knowledge, self-management and access to primary care for Black and Minority Ethnic groups for whom English is not a first language in west London. Their consultation found many people from the Somali community faced difficulties accessing health services due to language difficulties, which created barriers that left many feeling isolated and alienated from local services.With the grant they will employ staff to set up forums and run training and workshops to give people a greater say in local health provision across West London, so they can influence decision makers participate and improve service quality and access.
