Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery has a large archaeological collection. It has been collecting material since 1892. Between 1979 and 2001, large scale excavations were undertaken by a city-based archaeological unit. The archives from these along with more recent deposits including those from the Hadrian?s Wall World Heritage site have enlarged the collection more than four times. In common with many museums, Tullie House has suffered cuts in funding and staff. This has resulted in the move from specialist to generalist curators and a focus on the sustainability of the service with reduced resources. This means that all the collections need to be assessed and plans, which include dispersal and rationalisation, created. This project will facilitate this. In order to achieve this, the first task is to quantify the types of material that the museum holds. This includes both the bulk material and the individually recorded finds. This audit will give a more accurate picture than exists at present. A similar inventory will be made of the paper archives that are held. A list of the main sites that are represented will also be compiled. A survey will be undertaken of selection and retention criteria. Consultation will be held with the local archaeological contractors, as well as the County Archaeologist to get their opinions. The result should be a set of criteria that can be used by the museum to apply to the collection. These would then be used to assess the collection with a view to rationalisation and produce the estimates for the future.
