Our work is naturally in line with your objectives, as we aim to improve the lives of multiply-disadvantaged and marginalised female prisoners. We help them to overcome the barriers of their incarceration by giving them the knowledge and support to fulfil their potential, progress through the prison system and get released back into the community. We achieve this by helping them to access education, rehabilitation programmes and peer support (building their social networks) as well as pressuring prisons to ensure they are released in a timely manner. Our work has far-reaching effects on female prisoners health and well-being. The healthcare in prison is woefully inadequate, particularly support for mental health issues. We redress this balance by compelling prisons, local authorities and NHS trusts to provide due care to the women. We liaise and negotiate with these bodies and, where necessary, issue legal proceedings if they fail to meet their duties under Prison Law, and Equality, National Health Service, Chronically Sick and Department of Healths Fair access to Care Legislation. Our new Family Law work ensures that mothers in prison are informed of and able to assert their rights as parents and maintain as active a role as possible in their childrens lives whilst in prison, preserving and bolstering the family bond at a time of great strain. This improves the mental health and well-being of both parents and children, and can contribute to the earliest release of the former, back into the family unit. Our new Women Prisoners Justice Group aligns with building social networks, as it is a new group connecting nine professional women, who will collaborate and provide strength for each other through their shared experiences. That strength will enable them to pass on more support to all women in prison and help improve their health and well-being.
