The information available on domestic abuse is fragmented and hard to find. Women who do not recognise they are in an abusive relationship do not search for information in a way that leads them to the right information. WAFE's survivors handbook is online but it is not found by those who need it and, when found, the format and language do not resonate with women who have a preference for video, audio and bitesize information that they can access on their phone. This grant will support WAFE to develop a prototype of a new resource which is interactive, accessible and optimised for digital use, in order to reach more women, more effectively at an earlier stage.

Domestic abuse affects an estimated 1.2 million women per year. Many women experiencing domestic abuse become isolated and feel ashamed, struggling to access the support they desperately need. The Survivors Forum is a safe online community providing peer support for women over the age of 18 affected by domestic abuse, with over 65 posts every day and over 3,000 women currently registered. It is an innovative online message board, moderated by domestic abuse experts, that provides support to women experiencing or recovering from domestic abuse. The Survivors Forum offers crucial direct support for women affected by domestic abuse. The forum topics cover multiple areas of abuse and help women who are at different stages of accessing support, whether it be the initial decision to leave the relationship, guidance on reporting to the police, or life after abuse. We believe the Survivors Forum fills a vital gap, using online technology to provide a unique network of peer-to-peer survivors; a community of reassurance and understanding where those affected by domestic abuse can follow the road to recovery. The Survivors Forum enables women to access support whenever and wherever they need it. Online support is becoming increasingly important as it enables us to reach a much wider range of women, including those with complex needs, such as disability, who may be particularly vulnerable or isolated. We have over 3,700 registered users. Not all users register, we have had over 78,000 users visit the website with almost 1 million views in the past year.

Two women a week are killed by a current or former partner (ONS 2014); Women's Aid believes that as a society we need to look at every point of interaction with a survivor as an opportunity for intervention. This grant will trial a new approach that trains up visible community members (vets, religious leaders, shop staff etc) to operate an 'Ask Me' scheme. The Ask Me scheme will offer local people a space in their community in which they can disclose abuse and gather information about where to go for help locally. The scheme will be piloted in 3 areas in England and Wales. Ask Me aims to give survivors a window of opportunity in which they can contemplate alternatives to living with abuse.

In England domestic abuse and violence remains a prevalent threat to the safety of thousands of women and men each year. Two women are killed every week by a current of former partner. Since Comic Relief helped establish the National Domestic Violence Helpline (for England) with Refuge and Women’s Aid Federation England in 2003, demand for their support has increased over the years. Now the largest single referral point for refuge provision, the helpline plays a vital role in keeping victims safe. With this funding the partnership will continue to provide a freephone 24 hour telephone helpline, alongside a dedicated website and email support for victims and survivors, friends and family and also professionals working in this field.

This project will provide London-wide domestic and sexual violence helpline support and coordinated access to refuge provision. Through a partnership between the NDVHL, WGN and RASAC the project responded to the needs of all London callers - including men, boys and LGBT callers - experiencing domestic and/or sexual violence by providing: - confidential support and information to inform decision making; - risk assessment and safety planning; - referral to specialist services, including emergency safe accommodation; - a dedicated email referral mechanism to London refuge places for London borough officers; - online support and information. Callers will be supported in relation to all forms of domestic and sexual violence, including sexual exploitation within a gang context. UKROL provided comprehensive data on all London VAWG services, enabling users to instantly identify spaces in, and refer to, refuge accommodation. Drawing on information provided by the helplines and UKROL database, and collected directly from London domestic and sexual violence services, Women's Aid provided London Councils with comprehensive data on: - the nature and availability of service provision in London; - the utilisation of refuge provision; - outcomes of referrals across London (linked to protected equalities characteristics); - gaps in service provision.
