As with all educational institutions it is awarded funding by the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to support students who are in hardship and ensure that where possible, financial barriers to learning are removed. The college administers this funding as a means tested bursary and supports in approximately 1200 students each year that have a household income of £25,000 or less. Whilst this bursary is available the college does expect all students to contribute to their course financially in some way (at least a minimum of £100). This can be particularly difficult for those attending high cost courses (health & beauty, art etc) where they have to purchase a lot of personal kit or pay for essential trips throughout the year. In addition to this some students can face crisis with changing circumstances at home and very challenging financial and personal situations that can threaten their education. It is felt that these students could benefit from an additional WCF grant. |

Building on success in previous years Wiltshire YFC deliver community based Mobile Youth Work engaging with young people for a week in the Summer of 2021.Last year we connected with around 100 local young people and provided and safe and engaging space to talk around issues relevant to them including exam results family and social issues. We partnered with local Police other service providers and local residents to help build a stronger sense of community. Wiltshire YFC are committed to supporting communities and young people right across Wiltshire. We assist young people in their current challenges of life and during their transition to adulthood and encourages them to make a full and positive contribution to the communities in which they live. We use a Pop Up Youth Cafe Van that also transports our sports equipment ie football goals, basketball hoop, Tri- Volle and raquet sports . We continue to see people connecting and building relations during participation and challenges. We compliment this with additional activities including a rock climbing wall and inflatable activities like a penalty shoot out or assault course. |

KANDU ARTS COMMUNITY PROJECTS CIC |
We wish to apply for funding to continue to sustain our free at the point of delivery "engagement through football" community safety project, Kandu Kicks. It is a weekly project at a neutral and central location (Chippenham Astro Turf – Sheldon School to the estates it serves and is recognised by agencies as having a positive impact on the "street scene" ASB and crime by engaging those who don't have a sustainable gateway into positive activities or have been excluded from other provision. Kicks supports all skill levels, is funded by grants to ensure it is free at the point of delivery (capturing all those in socio-economic disadvantage) and is therefore fully inclusive. Some of the funding will pay for the hire of the astro-turf facilities, some for supporting mentors and the FA coaches who build relationships with participants and also support conflict resolution between the young people and promote opportunities outside the football project itself. This encourages the young people to consider their education and training options and in setting themselves life goals. Kicks participants to date have gone on to take part in other Kandu film and multimedia projects, outside agency work-ready placement programmes, in competitive sporting opportunities in London as well as successfully completing qualification in football coaching with our project partners Wiltshire FA. Sustaining Kicks over a period of years has so far, had huge benefits. This has allowed us to engage and mentor young people in their teenage years. With their continued participation we can now see past cohorts mentoring their peers and younger siblings and friends. Kicks hosts a popular annual cup, celebrated in the press and an FA affilated competition which attracts many other inclusion teams from local hostels, the homeless and refugee and asylum projects to compete against the police to further build community cohesion. This grant has and again if awarded helped to make tangible changes to the lives of the Chippenham young people who use our project. Kicks has been established for 8 years. It uses the same core delivery team as at the outset. Kicks has successfully attracted support in the past from those including the PCC, the Football Foundation and the FA, achieving a Kite mark is an “Inspired by 2012 Olympic Inspirational Project” with a commemorative tile at the Olympic Park in London, Just Play and Mash Up recognition and awards. Kicks has been accredited by street games as a project that has become part of the fabric of the community that leads to stronger and safer communities that champions social action, volunteering, health and wellbeing. Kicks enjoys good profile and word of mouth. The project benefits from other cross neighbourhood work in the locality. Kicks enjoys good press online and the annual inclusion cup attracts more participants each year. See our website Kandu Kicks films and “Why Sport” sections at www.kandu-arts.com for further reports and young people’s recommendations. |

ALDBOURNE YOUTH COUNCIL |
Quoting directly from our constitution: "The objects of [AYC] are to advance in life and help young people in Aldbourne Parish and surrounding villages through: (1) The provision of recreational and leisure time activities provided in the interests of social welfare designed to improve their conditions of life. (2) Providing support and activities that develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent mature and responsible individuals." The existence of AYC, and participation in its activities by a significant number of local young people, contributes directly to building a strong community. This is strengthened by encouraging the young people to join in community activities, both as participants, e.g. the annual Scarecrow Trail, and as organisers, e.g. an Easter Egg Hunt and a 'WhoDunnit' Murder Mystery Map. In recent years, less so in 2020 because of Covid, AYC has organised vacation programmes of sporting activities for young people. These benefit the individuals' physical and mental well-being, develop teamwork and leadership life skills, and contribute to community spirit. Our proposed project, described later, would continue those programmes and benefits. It is not always easy to differentiate life skills and employability skills. With help from AYC our young people have: - Gained Duke of Edinburgh awards and acquired many and varied skills in the process - Received food safety in catering (QCF) Certificate levels 1 and 2, which are an entrée to employment in catering and hospitality, and useful domestically too. - Put those skills to use as occasional part-time (paid) workers in our internal café / tuck shop, thereby gaining work experience. - Had training in interview skills. - Accessed our IT resources to assist completion of homework assignments, especially those who have little or no IT access at home. Our premises, known as Community Junction, help another section of the community too. Many of our volunteers are single and elderly, and one of the reasons why they volunteer to help in our charity shop is that it provides social contact which would otherwise be missing from much of their life. They socialise among themselves, with the customers of the charity shop and café, and when Covid permits, with others who simply drop in for a chat. We believe this contributes to the mental well-being of all concerned. |

SHINE PINEHURST |
One of our most successful Youth activities we run is something called Friday Football. Each week we have over 60 young people come and play football. This was started after a conversation with a Mum and her 11 year old son as she wouldn't let him out of the house as she was rightly concerned about him being picked up and exploited by other young people and adults - particularly involved in drug trafficking. The young lad wanted somewhere safe and fun where he could go and play with his friends where his Mum would feel confident to let him out. This is where Friday Football started and continues to grow. |

TROWBRIDGE TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB |
We provide footballing facilities for all. This allows the youth players to form friendships & bonds outside of their school environment, team spirit & support / encouragement of each other. We improve their fitness levels via active participation, which in turn helps their mental help - we have received numerous comments from parents on this latter point upon resumption of training. Being Trowbridge based, we are visible within the local community & have strong links to Active Trowbridge & the Town Council. |

SWINDON STORM AMERICAN FOOTBALL CLUB |
Swindon Storm are by constitution Not for Profit, Amateur American Football Club, based in Wiltshire. We have 2 competitive Full Contact teams (helmets and shoulder pads). One Under-16, mixed genders,13-16-year-olds, and the other covering Seniors, mixed 18+. A Women’s Full Contact team (females only, ages 17+ which started participation in 2021), 1 Flag Football team for Adults aged 16+. Prior to COVID, we had plans to set-up an Under-11 Flag team (for mixed, 7-11-year-olds). The U-11’s launch has now been delayed until January 2022 Building Strong Communities Moving to Southbrook we actively engaged with the local resident, we arranged leaflet drops to announce that we would be there and reinforced the view that we strongly believe that the high cost of American football equipment should not be a barrier to anyone wishing to take up the sport -Playing for Swindon Storm allows young people to represent their town within a National League, creating a strong sense of community and immense pride in wearing their home town's name on their shirt, and appearing in local and regional press on line and in newspapers. Developing Life Skills and Developing Employability Skills: Playing American Football develops self-reliance and accountability, punctuality, physical stamina and self-confidence. All very important life and employability skills. We encourage our youth team graduates to attend coaching, first aid, safeguarding and refereeing courses to assist them in becoming assistant coaches, and onto becoming lead coaches, which is amazing in developing organisational and life skills. Those that go onto coaching develop the superb employment managerial skills of planning, organising and delivering coaching sessions and managing units of up to 10 players per coach during 2 hour training sessions and games. Improving Mental Health: Team sport is a well-documented way of improving mental health, and the club has a mental health champion. We also hold an annual funding raising exhibition match to raise funds for mental health charities. Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour: The club are actively recruiting under-18s from the community directly surrounding the sports ground by organising leaflet drops with the Local Authority. We train and play at Southbrook playing fields, in one of the most economically and socially deprived areas of Swindon. COVID has seen an increase in unemployment for the over-18’s and those under 18 can be faced with the temptations of a rife ‘County Lines’ drugs gangs’ problems. We began working with Swindon Borough Council (SBC), Central Swindon North Parish Council (CSNPC) and the local Police in early 2020 to provide an outlet for all ages and genders away from these issues. There is an issue with 'gang culture' in this area and it is hoped that we could be part of the solution - we know we are not the silver bullet, just part of the bigger picture and will work with anyone to help achieve this. Our club offers a safe environment for young people to let off excess energy and learn self-control through an exciting and dynamic team sport |

DURRINGTON FOOTBALL CLUB |
Durrington FC is a Charter Standard development football club affiliated to Wiltshire FA. ,We recruit our members from the local community, and our membership is made up of both military and civil communities, between the age of 5 years to 17 years, boys and girls, in our established youth wing and more recently an new female adult team which currently has 20 members. Since the beginning of the the global pandemic, we have created 4 new youth teams, one adult team enrolling 85 new youth members. Our current membership is approximately 225. It is our aim to help develop young people through participation in sport. This is a key for good mental health and physical wellbeing, by promoting resilience and social skills on and off the pitch along with working as a team, this also transfers to key life skills in communication, positive attitude. During the last year as a club we have continued to engage with our members setting challenges to keep them active both physically and mentally and purchased every youth member a new football to aid this. By providing a sense of belonging it helps provide a community spirit which helps not only our members but also the wider community. |

CLARENDON JUNIORS FOOTBALL CLUB |
Developing life skills , we introduce our players to organised teams sports from the age of six , we are open to any player regardless of gender, ethnicity, background or beliefs, different young people devlop at different life stages, we provide developmental game time to all players and if appropriate individual access programs. We encourage players to enjoy their playing experiences and share with each other successes and learning points .. the focus is on having fun and having the space to relax One young man who joined our club under 7 team was a shy short uncoordinated player , he has stayed with the club right through to our adult team , he now has the record number of club appearance (and until recently the record number of goals ) he has vastly improved his footballing and social skills (he is also over 6’2”) and he has been coveted by other clubs but has wanted to remain loyal to the club that helped him develop, we supported him to obtain his referee qualifications and he now helps the younger players understanding the rules of the game as well as officiates adult matches . We are not a club focused on winning matches or titles (yes it is nice) but we come back to wanting to be a family club that enjoys being together and having fun. Our cafe is our hub to the club, we have a responsibility to the young people around football and their ongoing development but we also need to be available for our parents and extended family, it is not uncommon for our parents to suffer the every day life occurrences, (divorce, death , financial concerns, family breakdowns, communication with growing children, education concerns, growing up concerns) it is so nice to have a stable network available within the cafe and teams that can signpost or support others going through turbulent times, thus potentially reducing an individual stress or enhanced emotional state. One of our club aims is that we are a family club with multiple teams and extended family within our umbrella and not 16 separate teams wearing the same badge. This was never more evident than when we took the whole club to watch England play a match at Wembley, the big guys looked out for the little guys (and visa versa). We encourage senior players to undertake further training courses and either become FA approved coaches or FA approved Referees or even just chill and have a kick around with players from a different age group , some of our coaches are still players within the club , One of our players has recently become involved with the FA on the youth council. Our weekly sports updates on the local social media networks and parish magazine has connected really well with many of the village resident s and they want to be part of our development . |

CHALKE VALLEY SPORTS CENTRE |
The Chalke Valley Sports Centre serves the communities of the Chalke Valley and neighbouring villages. Our aim is to provide a range of sports, recreational and social activities to all sections of the community. Age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and ability are no barrier to access. We would say our primary aims are the promotion of physical and mental health, but overall to build a stronger community through providing opportunities to participate in a range of activities that bring people together. We support the Chalke Valley School through facility access and after school clubs as well as coaching opportunities to develop skills and confidence. We provide physical activity for the older and less mobile through clubs like the indoor short mat bowls club, and we have recently constructed a Petanque Terrain to enable competitive participation in a local league; social interaction through a 'turn up and play' arrangement; and family and intergenerational opportunities by being accessible to all. Throughout lockdown, the Centre was able to encourage use of the playing fields for socially distanced exercise and throughout the pandemic the Centre's outdoor areas have been available to you young people for play and recreation. We have recently developed links with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme and this Spring provided the venue for the Expedition element of the Award. A range of coaching activities is normally available, though curtailed through the pandemic. This is targeted to young people in particular and we are seeking to establish new opportunities for young people as part of our "Getting Our Community Active Again' initiative, including Pickleball, outdoor table tennis, cricket practice nets and this outdoor basketball project. If successful we plan to work with the GOGA project to integrate disabled members of our community; with WASP to further promote opportunities to young people; and with Wiltshire Council on sports development initiatives. |

SWINDON SHOCK LADIES BASKETBALL CLUB |
Developing Life Skills: We coach people to deal with challenges, both personal and team-related. We teach codes of conduct on how to appropriately support our own team whilst remaining respectful of the opposition. Improving basketball skills takes time, effort and resilience. Matches inevitably involve difficult periods for players personally and collectively. We coach the players to deal with these difficulties in a way that improves their ability to deal with challenges off-court. We improve their team-working skills by enhancing their ability to interact with others and organise dynamically towards a common goal. Building Strong Communities: We are the only ladies basketball club in Swindon and 1 of only 3 in the County that compete regularly. Our players represent their Town in the region and this gives them a close personal bond to the Town. They develop lifelong friends and a shared connection tot he Town and develop their own basketball community locally. Improving Mental Health: Sport is incredibly important in giving people a way to forget about other pressures in their lives. It also reaffirms the support structures that are inherent in a close-knit team. Therefore, this provides the social network and friends that can listen and help in adversity. Post-pandemic, it is even more important to allow people to have pursuits that expand their horizons from the isolation that many of us have felt during the continual lockdowns we have been subjected to. Developing Employability Skills: Working well in a team and taking personal responsibility are key messages in basketball. We all have to accept the burden of responsibility for what occurs and how we intend to rectify problems, both personally and collectively. When playing basketball, emotions are high and controlling that emotion while working towards a common aim, helping team mates when they falter and tasting victory and defeat as a cohesive group and key skills of value in employment. Reducing Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour: The connection that representation of the Town provides of individuals to their communities develops pride. This pride reduces the likelihood of descending into negativity. Also, improving basketball skills takes a large number of hours of dedicated effort, which is time spent in positive endeavour that isn't then available for use as negative endeavour. Giving players an opportunity to pursue their sport minimises the likelihood that players will descend into crime or anti-social behaviour. |

SWINDON ST GEORGE WHEELCHAIR RL |
The overall aim is to provide access to a fun wheelchair sport that is inclusive to all. It is not just for wheelchair users, but within our club, able bodied friends and relatives can play and train together, both for fun and at competitive games, locally and at festivals nationally. an example of this is some years ago, a local man who had a workplace accident, leaving him parallised, joined the club , he brought his teenage daughter, who could play a sport together with her dad. This was beneficial in many ways, his mental health was improved, his family life improved and he gained confidence. |

Infused in our coaching sessions at NWBP are not only mechanisms to teach children how to physically play badminton in an enjoyable manner but also to educate them and create a healthy mindset in respect of the importance of safety before and after exercise, what comprises of a healthy diet, development of social skills and sporting/ competitive etiquette, consideration and support for our friends, sporting partners and opponents and respect for our coaches and volunteer assistants. The quality of our offer enables us to provide opportunities for children to train as many times a week and at whatever intensity they wish from those who play once a week and for mostly social purposes to those who dream of becoming elite players and train 3 or 4 times a week. We also offer both junior and senior players opportunities to step up and embark upon their own coaching journeys, we are Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Assessors, and work closely with both our local county sports development team and our NGB to provide our young assistants with the opportunity to obtain Young Leadership Skills and qualifications, to assist at coaching sessions and have extremely strong links with Badminton England and their and other Coach Educators to provide all those who seek to assist at our sessions to work towards the necessary qualifications and gain the appropriate safeguarding certifications so to do. SALISBURY FENCING CLUB |
Developing Life Skills We are a small friendly club that thrives on bringing people together from all walks of life and all ages. We encourage fencers to be part of a team and develop the ability to coexist with other people, and do so in a positive and productive fashion. The ability to work within a team is a skill that will serve well for an entire lifetime. The question often asked at interviews is ‘what is important as a team player’ and being part of fencing club will give a practical content to this question. Learning how to be effective members of a larger community, will help look beyond their own self-interest and find ways to contribute to the group. Teamwork extends to a variety of different soft skills including communication. Communication is necessary whilst learning and taking part in fencing with good sportsmanship being essential. Learning how to handle and interact with authoritative figures is part of sport and although we may not always agree with those positions of authority such as coaches or referees, we have to respect that persons’ authority. Fencing demands the full focus and concentration of a person and will mentally sharpen and hone in on what it is that needs to get done. Success in sports is one of the most exhilarating feelings and builds confidence. This will encourage fencers to be eager to find more of it in all areas of their lives. Salisbury Fencing welcomes all people from all walks of life, age and gender. We encourage acceptance and equality within our club, and it is part of the core values in the fencing community and life in generally. Improving mental health Fencing can improve mental health in several ways. Physical activity releases feel-good hormones that make you feel better in yourself giving better self esteem and more energy. By focusing on an activity it can help manage stress, anxiety and depression, and can be a positive coping strategy for difficult times. Connecting with people in a group or team can help meet new and like-minded people, and make new friends. |

TRAVELLING SWORDS |
Jacob – Year 6 Jacob started fencing because he was increasingly less motivated by team sports, constantly being overlooked, left feeling unmotivated and disengaged. He wanted to try individual disciplines and fencing appealed when he completed the pilot programme. Jacob said “From the very first time I held a sword I knew this is the sport for me. I’m not naturally confident and wearing a mask helps my confidence grow. Sword fencing has really helped me see how good I can be at sport as well as in the classroom. Fencing has shown me that I can naturally move and think quickly and now I’m determined to be the sabreur that other children will have to beat”. Examples of what our child members said about our club before Covid: “Fencing changed my mind about sport and how much I exercise. Fencing is awesome!” Shanti “I love this so much and I want to do more fencing.” Lilleth “Sparring with swords is the best.” Kayaan “Sword fencing is the best sport – 10/10” Thomas Fencing changes young people’s lives. It is the ultimate leveller where analysis overcomes physical strength, agility beats force and our ethos nurtures individuality so participants feel comfortable in their own skin. We help those on the margins, facing systemic barriers, who feel bypassed and overlooked in school and society (BAME, girls and those in poverty) regardless of background, race, ability, gender, religion. We immerse ourselves through dialogue with disadvantaged communities who typically wouldn’t access this learning to improve self-efficacy, mental health, resilience and help children find out just how capable they are. In short, we use sport to help children feel better about themselves. We: •Reframe sport in the minds of underprivileged and disadvantaged children as a positive part of their lives, learning life skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, listening and perseverance. •Redefine their life experience to be broader and better than before through responsibility and respect. •Help rediscover their enjoyment of physical activity and how it brings life-long value. Fencing supports positive mental health because it captures the imagination of our younger generation, providing escapism from pressures of the digital world. It encourages participants away from sedentary activities into an active sport that very few have experienced before. Burning up to 400 calories per session and described as "physical chess" it is a physical and mental challenge as fencers must think how to score hits on opponents without being hit themselves. For those not inclined toward team games, fencing is an ideal sport to promote their individuality. This in turn, helps improve their mental well-being and sense of fulfillment. Our goal is to be an ongoing fun sports club based on equality, diversity and inclusion, rooted in the social purpose of improving children’s resilience, self-efficacy, health, self-confidence, well-being and other life skills. |

PINEHURST NETBALL CLUB |
I believe that we have worked towards all the above outcomes at different times. A Sports Club is a community and the skills developed while belonging to that community help develop life skills and consequently employability skills. We work in the area of Pinehurst which has its anti social problems and it gives young people something to concentrate on and enjoy. We also provide somewhere that young Mothers can go to and enjoy each other company. Case Study: We had a young woman with three children come to us as her one evening away from the cares of the Family and the opportunity to chat with others. She and he Husband were unemployed and living in Pinehurst. She joined the Club, helped by our hardship fund, and eventually played matches on a Saturday. While she was playing various Members of the Club looked after her children. Members also ensured that she was provided with transport to and from the matches. While she was with the Club she was able to attend courses and when she qualified she obtained employment. Sadly the Family moved in order for her Husband to get work and we have not seen her since, but I hope she decides to continue her Netball. |

WILTSHIRE COLLEGE |
Wiltshire College is one of the largest FE and HE colleges in the county and recruits in excess of 3500 full time students each year. |

HOME-START SOUTH WILTSHIRE |
Set up in 1999, Home Start South Wiltshire (HSSW) provides support to families with young children under five, who are struggling to cope for a range of reasons, including social disadvantage, poverty, mental health issues or disability. Funding is to maintain their current 1:1 support service and develop a follow up support network in order to help people move on from this. Original application: This application was to contribute to the costs of the Reaching Out service (one to one support) and the Building Together project (follow-up support network) for three years COVID19 update: HSSW are having to be creative in the way they are now delivering their services in response to the situation. They are continuing to support families through remote working, using phone calls, video links such as Zoom, and social media. They are also providing emergency support to families, such as food and babies essentials, through linking up with other local organisations such as the Trussell Trust and community support schemes and sometimes delivering goods themselves. They are beginning to receive referrals directly linked to the CV situation, and support needed will build, both in size and severity, where families are dealing with a loss of family member or financial means or other stressors. They are looking at working more efficiently, without comprising the support needed, against a background of reduced income streams, due to the CV situation. They would like this application to be revised to solely cover their one to one support service in Year 1 (£5000), and to start support for the Building Together project in Year 2, when they expect to get it going. |
