The expected outcome of this project is an increase to the quality of life for these women both during and beyond their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Some of the impact may be physical as a result of the Nordic walking and swimming. Nordic walking has been shown to reduce both physical and psychological effects of cancer such as fatigue in people. http://www.inwa-nordicwalking.com/nordic-walking-cancer/. There is evidence to suggest walking and moving in water such as a pool brings relief to patients that suffer from Lymphedema post treatment. More importantly, there will be psychological benefits that come from the group experience. The project will enable women with cancer to share experiences and connect with others. This reduces the impact of isolation and improves wellbeing. Previous clients of groups counselling offered by WHY have said that a group offers a transitional stage of stepping back into life after years of being a patient and that the groups setting offers an insightful mirror that is both helpful and confidence boosting. Here are a couple of quotes from previous clients, albeit from a different type of group setting:- The group members helped me with practical ideas and made suggestions about organisations I could get in contact with. Its because of the group that my partner is now receiving the help he desperately needs. I found the bond we had with each other was extremely important. As one of these quotes demonstrates, a further outcome from these activities will be the signposting the other support available, not least of which is the regular one to one counselling that WHY now offers in the area.

The project will use the funding to expand its free counselling services which are offered to anyone affected or bereaved by cancer or other life threatening illnesses. The project covers Somerset, West Wiltshire and Bath and North East Somerset. The project aims to help people feel less isolated and anxious, improve their mental health and wellbeing and improve communication within families. This long-running initiative is the only service of its kind in the area.
