This funding will support Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse (AAFDA) to grow and deliver their advocacy service and peer support activities for families bereaved by a domestic abuse victim’s suicide or unexplained death receiving £450142 over three years to work with families across England. Emotional and practical support is designed to help those bereaved in this way to access the criminal justice process and to overcome the trauma of losing a loved one.Organisation AAFDA is an incorporated charity registered in 2008. They provide specialist advocacy and peer support to families and friends bereaved by domestic homicide and domestic abuse related suicides and unexplained deaths (DARS/UD). They provide advocacy through Domestic Homicide Review (DHR) inquests police conduct reviews and other types of inquiries giving practical advice and emotional support throughout the process through face to face and over the phone. All trained advocates working with the organisation have lived experience of serious and/ or fatal domestic abuse two of which have been previous services users of AAFDA. Online peer support is available both in online group chats through 1:1 zoom calls and events. The organisation offers accredited training for professionals on DHRs and awareness training on domestic abuse related death and working with families. Almost 1 in 2 women aged 16-59 will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime (ONS2019) with 2 women killed each week by a partner or former partner. It is estimated that a third of female suicide in England and Wales are related to domestic violence approximately 400 a year (Walby2004). Between 2017-19 576000 men were victims of partner violence with 11% considering taking their own lives as a result of abuse. In 2021 AAFDA received 60 new suicide/unexplained death referrals an increase of 17 cases on the previous year. They are currently dealing with 78 open cases.Proposal Through this proposal AAFDA seek to continue apport throughout this time via face-to-face meetings email Skype/Zoom and telephone calls around 41% referrals will require 1-3 days of support per year and 30% requiring up to 5 days. Each face-to-face meeting lasts on average of 4 hours. The advocate will also signpost families to other appropriate supporting services as well as AAFDA’s peer support groups; with the ultimate aim of helping families to move on positively in their lives to a ‘new normal’. In addition to advocacy this grant will contribute to the organisation’s peer support programme supporting both families who have lost someone to fatal domestic abuse and DARS/U. The organisation currently run three ‘Peer Mentor’ led support sessions each week. These sessions typically run for 60-90 minutes and reach around 150 bereaved family members each year. The programme is currently delivered by AAFDA staff however it is an aim of this project to transition to a delivery model which is truly peer led using ‘Peer Mentors’ who have themselves lost a loved one to fatal domestic abuse to facilitate and shape the programme going forward. Peer groups enable families who wish to remain in touch with AAFDA once their advocacy ends to do so and to connect with families who wanted to explore the impact of losing a sibling or a parent in a workshop environment and to provide male only peer support. Each month workshop sessions are facilitated with guest speakers as requested by the family members covering topics such as:- Self-care following bereavement- Biological responses to bereavement- What to expect from and the benefits of psychotherapy- Trauma responses and mindfulness/grounding techniques - Commemorative sessions at Christmas and in October (to coincide with All Souls Day) Each year AAFDA will run two face-to-face group-based emotional support workshops for bereaved families in two locations across the country. This will be based off the success of the first 3 day residential retreat de
