In taking part in the Tuesday Drop-in, women and girls can participate in a range of activities, including knitting, sewing, art/crafts, baking or music. Learning a new skill is always an exciting challenge, and having a tangible finished object to show for it, (be it a knitted hat, scarf, or a garment which has been hand or machine sewn, a piece of art work or home baked cakes or scones) all produce a great sense of accomplishment which boosts the confidence of girls and women. Similarly, being able to teach a skill or technique to others is in itself an accomplishment and will positively impact on their sense of well-being. The community lunch gives opportunities for women to prepare, cook and serve a simple lunch of soup, with bread, salad and cheese. All the skills involved, (shopping with a budget, preparing the food, cooking, following a recipe, setting the table, etc), are sometimes new experiences for some women, who may tend to buy frozen or prepared meals, but the experiences gained (we have observed) can make a remarkable difference to their attitude about their own abilities, healthy eating and affordability. Nothing builds confidence more than people praising the person who has made the soup that day! These cooking/shopping skills are almost always transferred to the family home situation for the benefit of the whole family. Likewise the arts/craft/music sessions give women the opportunity to connect with other and learn new skills and explore their creative abilities - they subsequently gain not only pleasure and satisfaction from taking part, (they all enjoy the banter), but also a boost in their confidence. Workers and volunteers who take part in the home visits report that the scheme has a positive influence on lonely/isolated mums, as it helps them become connected, feel valued and accepted.
