THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

To conserve, advance and disseminate the dramatic heritage of Shakespeare and advance and improve the dramatic art in the UK and throughout the world; producing and presenting dramatic performances of all kinds and teaching, training and other educational activities. These objectives are achieved by the production of plays by Shakespeare, other classic playwrights and commissioning new work.
Analysis by Giving is Great

Positives:

  • A significant proportion of recent income was derived from major grant makers including the Government
  • The Board appears to be well diversified in terms of gender and dynamic in terms of composition

Regulatory & Governance issues to consider:

  • Although this charity works with volunteers it does not have a Volunteer Management policy
  • Why are there 16 trustees whereas the Charities Commission recommends a maximum of 12?

Financial issues to consider:

  • There is a pension deficit of £2,258,000
  • Income has been volatile and on several occasions in recent years less than spending
