As lockdown turned digital access into an everyday necessity, people without were left especially isolated. Community TechAid creates access and digital inclusion by repairing old, donated devices and providing them to those who need them most.
Operating in Southwark and Lambeth, CTA trains volunteers, many of whom are long-term unemployed or former beneficiaries, to repair mobiles and laptops. CTA enables volunteers to grow their confidence, digital skills, and networks. It has so far saved 4,000 devices from landfill and given away 2,100 to those in need.

The funding will be used to hire key staff as well as provide grants plus support focussed on strategy development. Funding will cover hire of full-time staff to continue meeting the need for hardware, and support the expansion of reach from Lambeth to include Southwark and build out other areas of work including: facilitating access to internet connectivity, facilitating access to a human helpline and training for device recipients, providing career-enhancing opportunities for young residents of Lambeth and beyond to learn, develop and practice skills required to use and renovate IT devices, championing the right to repair and encourage the reuse of e-waste through building skills and experience, developing partnerships with other local organisations working in digital inclusion such as Clear Community Web and Millennium Community Solutions, to support the sustainability and scale of CTA's impact.

Community TechAid (previously known as Lambeth TechAid) was organised on a voluntary basis in late March 2020 in response to the Covid-19 lockdown, which amplified the digital divide. They are a group of volunteers aiming to help bridge the digital divide in Lambeth by supplying smart phones, tablets and laptops to children and adults who would not otherwise be able to obtain them. They have now formed a trustee board and registered as a charity and work out of St Vincent's Brixton (formerly Brixton Community Base). This proposal is to part-fund a full-time Chief Operating Officer who will be responsible for developing and growing Community TechAid. Long-term plans include a Hub/Volunteer Manager and Young People's Computer Repair Clubs.

Lambeth TechAid was organised on a voluntary basis in late March 2020 in response to the Covid-19 lockdown, which amplified the digital divide. They are a group of volunteers aiming to help bridge the digital divide in Lambeth by supplying smart phones, tablets and laptops to children and adults who would not otherwise be able to obtain them. They have now formed a trustee board and are registering as a charity. This application is to provide funding for part-time staff (to oversee volunteers who refurbish computers and volunteer delivery drivers), premises rent (to be able to have a dedicated workshop to store and refurbish the computers) and website development. The project will then be able to grow and continue to provide free refurbished IT equipment to low income Lambeth residents.
