The funding will be used for school children to deliver afternoon teas to 11 residential homes across Cheshire West and Chester and take part in intergenerational activities to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The project aims to bring people together from different generations to share stories and learn from each other to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness for both the residents and children following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Passion for Learning's work is about supporting and inspiring vulnerable children aged 5-11 to learn, achieve and become literate in order to fulfil their true potential as adults. The project will make life-changing differences to 50 vulnerable young people in Knutsford primary schools by providing them with access to Enrichment Clubs, comprising skilled Passion for Learning volunteers and (when circumstances permit) unique opportunities including special events, trips and experiences they wouldn’t otherwise be able to encounter. The grant funding will be used to provide Enrichment Clubs at two schools, covering the costs of weekly sessions, tailored resources, staffing and volunteers for a full year. The most significant difference this will make to the children participating is in developing their confidence, their engagement with learning and their future ambitions, all of which are crucial factors in unlocking their potential for fulfilled lives as adults.

Passion for Learning CIO works with children from a wide range of challenging and limiting backgrounds providing them with the enriching activities and experiences that enable them to fulfil their potential as learners and ultimately employees. This project will deliver an Enrichment Club in Neston. The club provides exciting and imaginative themed activities, experiences, workshops, visits and events that are designed to broaden children's horizons and give them the inspiration that they need to develop ambitions and see learning as relevant to them. The grant will pay for a club supervisor, a wide range of resources, enrichment bags for the children to take home, food and snacks, trips, visits, workshops, planning and preparation. Children attending the Clubs grow in confidence and self-esteem, communication skills, their ability to sustain positive relationships and many other social and emotional skills critical to becoming effective learners and maintaining mental well-being.

Passion for Learning provides volunteer support and enrichment to children from challenging family circumstances that create barriers to learning. The project will deliver learning resources and enrichment activities directly into the family home. The funding will pay for the books, games, materials and activities that will form the contents of the bags. Many of our families have few or no learning resources in their own homes, including books and other absolute basics, meaning that they were disproportionately impacted by the challenges of home learning and the experience of lockdown.

Passion for Learning's work is about supporting and inspiring vulnerable children aged 5-11 to learn, achieve and become literate in order to fulfil their true potential as adults. The project for which we are applying for funding will make life-changing differences to 30 vulnerable young people in Knutsford primary schools by providing them with skilled Passion for Learning volunteers and access to the unique opportunities we provide for our beneficiaries e.g. the Careers Palace and Arts Festival. The grant funding will be used to recruit, train, DBS check and supply the tailored resources and ongoing support for 10 volunteers to work with 30 children for a full year. The most significant difference this will make to the children participating is in developing their confidence, their engagement with learning and their future ambitions, all of which are crucial factors in unlocking their potential for fulfilled lives as adults.

To maintain this service for 13 weeks, which is the period during which we believe families will be in greatest need of our support until schools reopen, we estimate the total cost to be £76,714. This is based on servicing 165 deliveries per week, which would enable us to reach 2145 families. The supporting spreadsheet provides the breakdown of costings, based on a resource pack budgeted at £28. As we have done to date, we will continue to procure resources free of charge from Giving World and other businesses prepared to offer support, e.g. magazine publishers, to obtain maximum value for the amount invested in the project. Following a discussion with Caroline DaCunha from the Westminster Foundation, we’ve submitted an application to the CWAC Covid-19 Community Response fund for £25,000 to part fund this project. We expect to hear the outcome of this application within 7 days (by 19th June). Subject to their decision, there is a potential project shortfall of £51,000, which we would be very grateful for the Steve Morgan Foundation’s support in addressing.

Passion for Learning's work is about supporting and inspiring vulnerable children aged 5-11 to learn, achieve and become literate in order to fulfil their true potential as adults. The project for which we are applying for funding will provide resources to vulnerable children from communities across Cheshire West and East (Knutsford) who will be most impacted by school closures during the current Covid-19 pandemic. The grant funding will be used to procure and distribute resources including books, games, craft materials, play items and small gifts which will occupy the children and enable them to continue reading and learning at home during the school closure period. The most significant difference this will make to the children is in mitigating the impact of school closures by maintaining their literacy, engagement with learning and crucially, helping to safeguard their wellbeing at a time of enhanced risk, when parents are experiencing greater than usual stresses in their often already chaotic lives.

We aim to give older children from the Enrichment Clubs the experience of volunteering themselves, through providing a sense of responsibility and ownership for their Club. They will have the opportunity to develop some of the skills they will need later in life, such as planning and budgeting. We also plan to recruit 17-20 year old volunteers from local schools, colleges and Chester University, reaching those who may not have considered volunteering before. We’ll promote the opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop professional skills, essential to younger people looking to gain employment or further study. The grant will also be used to deliver a Junior Careers Fair in conjunction with Cheshire College South and West, enabling college students to showcase their skills to the younger participants from local primary schools. The grant will cover bespoke training for the younger volunteers, and ongoing support once they are volunteering. The training will include basic parameters around regular, timely attendance, dressing and behaving appropriately, acting as a role model to the children in the Clubs, as well as planning and budgeting skills. The grant will also be used to fund transport and resource costs, aiming to reduce potential barriers to getting involved.
