This project will purchase 6 laptops to use at the Teyluva Centre to support the travelling community who live on a nearby Local Authority managed site. The group's current equipment is old and impractical so the laptops will help improve the service allowing them to deliver computers to the families so they remain COVID-19 safe. There are no phone lines on the Traveller site and limited mobile network coverage. Internet access is very limited so users rely on the Centre to get online claim benefits and other government services etc. The group run sessions for two different families every day.

The two-year project aimed to develop Teyluva Centre in St Day, a village near Redruth, to become a community project open five days a week for Gypsies and Travellers. It aimed to break down barriers and increase understanding between different sectors of the local community. As well as reducing the marginalisation of participants and strengthening the community, the project also gave them the opportunity to gain new skills and qualifications and gain valuable work experience through being involved with the day to day running of a community facility. Participants were integral to the running of the project through volunteering and taking part in the monthly steering group.

This grant enables us to support to Gypsy & Traveller young women, giving them opportunities to make life choices and have a more positive future which would otherwise be denied to them. Young women accessing the Women's group have the opportunity to gain valuable skills and confidence through taking part in the steering group and learning how to give opinions and consider those of others. Having your opinions taken into account and seeing ideas come to fruition is a rewarding experience that builds a sense of self-worth. Taking part in the activities on offer gives the opportunity to learn new skills, through the craft activities, group projects and access to computers. The weekly focus on either improving health and fitness or healthy cookery gives young women the confidence to try out skills learnt both at the Centre and at home. Many young women we work with have reported being lonely, and rarely leaving the site. Our short courses group will give participants the chance to develop the skills, confidence, self motivation & where appropriate the qualifications required to fully participate in wider society, reducing isolation & increasing resilience to rapidly changing economic & social conditions. The courses on offer will be based on the needs and wishes of the project participants We can offer ASDAN awards in a range of subjects, Driving Theory, as well as more formal Literacy & Numeracy. Taking qualifications increases employability, and gives participants the opportunity to improve life chances for themselves and those of their children. By having better educated mothers who can read to them and see the value of education, their children will ultimately be better skilled and more confident to pursue further opportunities outside of their immediate community.
