In ....more Our peer support project aims to provide help and support to black women in Sheffield and the surrounding areas, who have experienced or who are currently experiencing, mental health problems. In addition to the challenges that come with living with mental health issues, black women share a number of additional barriers and taboos embedded within the culture and experiences of the black community. We want to specifically support black women through smaller group peer support (aimed at different age ranges) that focus on helping individuals, along with larger peer summits that focus on specific taboo subjects facing this community. Getting the black community to engage in support labelled with mental health can be challenging due to the additional barriers, therefore we also want to trial a different approach to mental health peer support through training up local hair salon workers as peer mentors.
