Of these, it is the spire of St Stephen's church that can be seen from miles around and on all approaches to the town centre. Indeed, for those unused to the road layout of this new town, it is a vital feature to aid navigation. In fact, part of the planning conditions for the development of Redditch Newtown in the 1960s was that nothing could be built higher than St Stephen's. The church and its former graveyard and adjacent small park with bandstand form the centrepiece of the historic core of Redditch, the Church Green conservation area. The combination of water ingress and damage from a repointing scheme in cementitious pointing is causing significant damage to the fabric of the building, constructed of local Bromsgrove sandstone. This is contributing to its down at heel appearance of the church and its wider setting within the conservation area and is part of the reason that the church has been recommended for inclusion in the 2020 update of the Heritage at Risk register.
