This two-year project delivered ‘Speaking Up’ and action groups for people with learning disabilities living in Weymouth and Portland in Dorset. Sessions supported people to enhance their confidence and skills to speak up about issues affecting their lives and to voice these issues to key local decision-makers. They were also supported to challenge negative public perceptions and build stronger links within the wider community. Training workshops were run as part of the programme to enable participants to learn filmmaking and leadership skills. They shaped the project via an elected working group and regular evaluation sessions.

As a user-led organisation, the exact focus of the Speak Up group will be determined by its members. But we expect the project to build the skills and confidence of women with learning disabilities in a number of ways. Women with learning disabilities will: - increase their confidence and self esteem; - increase their understanding of womens health; - improve their health seeking behaviour; - increase their social networks. While we have selected what we believe to be the priority that best matches out project, we do expect to have an impact across all three areas. Working alongside members of the Speak Up group, our staff will raise issues with local partners in order to improve outcomes. We anticipate this would focus on a broad range of issues, but health is likely to be a primary concern. As a result, we would expect, for example, to work with local nursing teams to increase the number of members accessing screenings. However, all such actions will be directed by the group and unexpected outcomes are likely.

People with learning disabilities are often not consulted or not heard. People First Dorset is giving a voice to people with learning difficulties so that they can speak up and influence the services they receive. The organisation co-ordinates and supports “Speak Up” groups and with this grant they can extend their reach to start groups in eight new locations in Dorset. This will benefit around 200 people with learning difficulties to be confident and able to speak out and to influence and on occasion challenge decision makers on issues that affect their lives.

This is a project by a charity in West Dorset. The group will use funding to work with young people with learning disabilities to create a resource film about effective communication. This will then be used in training workshops for relevant community organisations such as local authorities and health services. This will strengthen the community through building understanding between young people with disabilities and relevant service providers, so they are more tolerant of their needs.
