English Heritage commissioned the Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology (HWTMA) to audit and appraise (Stage One, completed), assess (Stage Two, completed) and analyse (Stage Three, current) the archive for the Protected Wreck Site of the Stirling Castle. The ship was lost in the Great Storm of 1703. It is located towards the north-west side of the Goodwin Sands, c. 8.5 kilometres north-east of Deal, Kent. Stage One of this project (desk-top study archive audit and appraisal) involved locating, visiting and appraising site archive material including site records, surveys, images, videos and artefacts. The relevance of this work was to provide an archive audit and appraisal as an initial step in helping to enable public access to an archive of local, regional, national and international importance. A wide range of national, regional and local bodies and organisations and several private individuals were consulted. Stage Two (archive assessment) involved a detailed assessment of all archive material and the creation of an updated archive database. Results have demonstrated the wide variety and dispersion of the Stirling Castle archive, which is composed of the documentary (paper and graphic records, and digital archive including survey data) and the material archive (artefact assemblage and samples) of the site. The results of the archive assessment have formed the basis of the proposed archive analysis. The Analysis Stage will analyse all the known and collated documentary and material archive and undertake further dissemination work. Results will be presented in the production of a discussion paper on potential strategies for the management of the Stirling Castle archive to contribute towards its security and public accessibility. The Stirling Castle archive presents a unique opportunity to enable a further understanding of a period when ship design was being developed within the broader context of European conflicts and expanding globalisation, contributingto a wide variety of themes such as historical and environmental contexts, shipbuilding technology, life onboard, and trade networks amongst others. These themes will be researched during the Analysis Stage resulting in a Draft Publication Report. The publication of this report will ultimately contribute to raise awareness and enable further enjoyment of our common historic environment. For further details please refer to www.hwtma.org.uk

April 30th, 2017, will mark the centenary of the loss of HMT Arfon, a requisitioned trawler on active minesweeper duty when it struck a min laid by UC-61 off St Alban?s Head near Swanage, Dorset. The wreck now stands largely upright on the seabed in 43 m of water and represents a uniquely preserved example of an important vessel type that made a significant contribution to the maritime war effort. The centenary provides a timely opportunity to both highlight the significance of this historic vessel and commemorate its sinking.
