This funding will support Derby West Indian Community Association to continue delivering a programme of activities to improve physical and mental wellbeing for young people and older people from Black Caribbean communities. Derby West Indian Community Association (DWICA) has been running for over sixty years and is a membership organisation with a focus on improving the quality of life for people of West Indian heritage living in Derby City. The organisation manages a community centre and delivers a programme of free or low cost educational cultural social and recreational activities including the delivery of Derby’s Caribbean Carnival and Black History month events.

The group will also distribute recipe cards so that participants can learn to cook these meals on a budget going forward as well as information on the city’s Debt Alliance COVID Response Hub and Winter Warmer schemes to ensure BAME communities have access to information about other sources of support to help navigate these difficult times.

This two-year project, previously funded by the Trust, continues to deliver a programme of regular social and cultural activities, run by and for older people from black and minority ethnic communities living in Derby. Activities include weekly Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Over 50s games evenings, board games, film evenings, dominoes, darts matches, there are also be Carers support group meetings and community centre exchange hosting or visiting. The project continues to be developed by participants through discussion groups, feedback questionnaires and participants leading on planning and delivery.
