The mine closed in 1986 but ....more The Tilmanstone Miners Institute was set up by the former miners of Tilmanstone colliery to provide a recreation group for local residents and improve general conditions. The mine closed in 1986 but the institute has remained in the current clubhouse in an area that is now socially deprived. This project will extend and renovate the current building, allowing the group to address gaps in local services. Space will also be set aside for a permanent exhibition about the lives of workers at the old colliery.
