The Stogursey and District Victory Hall Committee own and maintain the Victory Hall, the Youth Club Building, the village playing field and a multi-use games area (MUGA). They are all on the same site. The Victory Hall is Stogursey's village hall. This provides facilities which are mainly used by adults. Many of the activities are used by elderly people who find that activities including line dancing, keep fit and Thai Chi classes and the short mat bowls club which for many are their main social activities. We provide the Youth Club building and funds to operate the club. The Youth Club sessions are run by YOUTH Unlimited CIC. They have free access to the Sports Field and MUGA. We operate a separate bank account for the Youth Club. The Youth Club used to be provided by Somerset County Council but when they abandoned their commitment to Youth Clubs the Committee stepped into the breach and have raised the funds to keep the club going. Stogursey is a rural community nine miles from the nearest town. There is no evening or weekend bus service and the youth club provides their only opportunity to get together and develop their social skills outside of the educational environment. The Club Leaders are people who are trained to provide counsel and guidance to young people, many of whom would struggle to obtain sound advice from other sources. Stogursey Youth Club is an integral part of our community. It provides the opportunity for the young to have a voice in the community and it contributes towards developing life skills, building a stronger community, developing employability skills, and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour. By contributing in all these areas it inevitably contributes to improved mental health for those who are at a very vulnerable stage of their life. The Youth Workers use sport and active games to build meaningful relationships among peer groups, creating an understanding of fairness, trust and support. Relationships with adults (staff) and the wider community improve community relations and reduce public concerns that young people have nothing to do. Sports & activities promote emotional health and wellbeing, enabling young people to build and develop skills, feel a sense of belonging and support by being part of a group. Being physically active promotes a sense of wellness and encourages reflection on improving lifestyle choices in order to be more healthy. We adopt informal games and activities in order to promote inclusivity & wellbeing so our focus is more on engagement and fun rather than competition and sporting achievement.
