A cornerstone of effective MPA management is how boundaries protect globally significant populations ofmarine higher predators (MHP; seals, seabirds, cetaceans). DPLUS0071 identified limited MHP tracking dataimpeded fine-scaling FI Marine Managed Areas (MMAs). This project will fill data gaps for globally significantMHP, enable fine-scaling of FI MMAs, and deliver risk assessment frameworks to facilitate informed decisionmaking. This will be achieved through a cost effective, locally driven MHP tracking program and workshops, inpartnership with FIG and JNCC.

The balance between sustainable tropical marine ecosystems (TME) and Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries(SSSF) is delicate. SSSF require robust evidence-based management, which in TCI is impeded by insufficientfish landings and life history data for stock assessments. With DECR and local fishers, the project will: buildfishers capacity for participation in fisheries management; centralise landing sites; train DECR staff in landingand biological data collection and management; provide equipment for the DECR Fisheries laboratory andconduct stock assessments using data collected.

The project will establish a wildlife health and disease strategy for the FI and blueprint for other UKOTs. Itwill provide the infrastructure for future monitoring for wildlife pathogens. Evidence indicates that zoonotic (animal origin) coronaviruses are responsible for three infectious disease outbreaks, including COVID-19. This project will address the absence of coordinated wildlife health and disease surveillance and management in UKOTs. This will be achieved by (i) review wildlife health and disease data for FI and bring together international experts and local stakeholders to identify priority data gaps, and establish an integrated approach to research, (ii) develop a webGIS database, (iii) provide theinfrastructure for in-country pathogen testing.

Wetland and freshwater environments of the Falkland Islands (FI) are key ecoregions in FI Environmental Policies. Habitat baselines are understudied and therefore the nature of land-use and climate change threats are little known and difficult to track. This project will combine existing expertise to establish current knowledge about FI wetland and freshwater environments, identify and address priority gaps through fieldwork, and describe indicators for long-term monitoring of both habitats and threats. Outputs will be fed into policy and management recommendations.

The Falkland Islands prioritised climate change mitigation action plan considers soil erosion, soil carbon content vulnerability and climate change assessments at policy level as high to medium priorities. To support these mitigation policies a baseline survey of soils, peatlands and erosion extent/risk will be undertaken and the results conveyed on an online data system to assist policy makers, conservation officers andland managers in deciding which actions are needed for long term mitigation measures against climate change effects.
