This project will use funding to work with community partners to coordinate volunteers to use surplus food to cook nutritious meals for and with people experiencing food poverty.Since 2015 FEAST With Us (FEAST) has mobilised volunteers to cook and provide healthy meals made from surplus food for Londoners experiencing food poverty. FEAST meaning: Feeding and Empowering All Sustainably Together aims to prevent malnutrition and food poverty promote community cohesion and minimise food waste. They support people via one of two routes. First through their model of community dining creating a safe space to engage in meal preparation with volunteers and chefs and cookery alongside nutrition education; vulnerable people are empowered through receiving nutritious food and improved well-being through dining together.ProposalThe support that FEAST offers is carried out via two routes 1) through communal dining sessions volunteers and meal recipients cook and dine together sharing experiences and learning new skills in a setting where everyone is treated as equal; 2) surplus meals that are cooked during these communal dining sessions are delivered to local homeless shelters and others in need of food. They are currently working at JW3 Barnes House (MIND) London Irish Centre and Queens Crescent Community Centre in Camden offering 1376 meals per month where there are high levels of deprivation. For additional wraparound support beyond their service offer or where the expertise of the staff and volunteers doesn't meet the needs of a service user they will involve the partners they work with to provide this additional support. MIND for mental health support London Irish Centre & Queens Crescent Community Centre who both offer support with advice & guidance.In 2023 they are expanding their reach through increasing the number of community venues and partners they work with and growing existing services. The funding will be used to address food poverty amongst homeless vulnerable and marginalised people in the Haringey area using surplus foods from local supermarkets and other providers in the food sector. The project aims to continue delivering the food parcel service and introduce a nutrition education programme and a community meals service.
