Baby Basics, Northampton, works with mothers and their children, which means our project primarily supports women and girls. Our baskets are a gift that shows value and care for the mother, whoever they are and whatever situations they are facing. By giving their child a safe place to sleep and a positive start to life, we are supporting their mothers mental health and wellbeing, which further positively impacts the child. We seek to provide these women with hope for life with their new. Our baskets promote self-esteem as well as giving a mother all that she needs to support her child in the first 3 months of its life. In some instances, our baskets enable babies to stay with their mothers, where otherwise this may not have been possible, and / or enable the mother to remain in a safe environment, rather than return to a place of abuse. The baskets include items that support cleanliness and hygiene, physical safety, warmth and comfort. Items are provided for the mother as well as the child. Working with other agencies, we hope to link mothers to wider networks of support for themselves and their babies. These include health visitors who will continue to care for them, where required, as well as the Fire Service who will carry out Fire Safety Checks in their homes. As well as the impact upon the immediate beneficiary, the mother, there is the impact on their child and family and also the wider public who are involved in the project. We have recruited a number of female volunteers and have built a community around the project who give their skills, time, items and finances to Baby Basics. We believe that this sense of community has a positive influence on their mental health and wellbeing too.
