We believe our project meets all three Tampon Tax Community Fund objectives. Objective 1: When women achieve their breastfeeding goals, they grow in confidence in their new, and often overwhelming, role as a mother. Studies show that women who successfully breastfeed their babies are less likely to experience postnatal depression. Objective 2: Our expected output is the provision of skilled breastfeeding support to mothers, resulting in an outcome of increased breastfeeding. This results in healthier mothers, babies and families. Babies from these 400 families would have improved health outcomes; babies who are breastfed have lower rates of infection in early years, particularly gastrointestinal, respiratory and ear infections, and lower rates of diabetes and heart disease longer-term. For the women wanting to breastfeed, we will support them to meet their goals and to overcome difficulties and challenges with breastfeeding, especially in the early days. Receiving the support to continue breastfeeding is anticipated to result in improved mental and physical health outcomes for mothers. Breast and ovarian cancer risks are reduced for women the longer they breastfeed. Objective 3: Another outcome is the strengthening of the community amongst women in Trumpington, a new-build, fast growing suburb of Cambridge, where families moving in often lose social networks and miss their extended family support. Friendships initiated at the breastfeeding drop-in sessions can continue to build stronger communities, enabling women, as they grow into their new role as mothers, to share their challenges and difficulties, creating a community where women are empowered to actively support each other to tackle their problems. Another output of our activities is the recruitment and training of women volunteers from the local community to support our breastfeeding drop-in sessions. The outcome of this is that volunteers benefit from experience that can later help with employment opportunities, and build their confidence.

The project will provide support and information by continuing to run drop-in sessions for mothers and families who are breastfeeding.

This organisation will use the funding to hold breastfeeding drop-in sessions for local mothers and their babies. This will provide information and support for mothers who wish to breastfeed.
