Genetic Alliance UK Ltd has received a £162821 grant over 3 years to expand the SWAN UK project to the Cardiff area and beyond. They will work with families of children with undiagnosed genetic conditions to grow their support networks. Initially this will be through an online community but then developing further local networks to improve the knowledge resilience and emotional health and wellbeing of families. Mae Genetic Alliance UK Ltd wedi derbyn grant o £162821 dros dair blynedd i ehangu prosiect SWAN UK i ardal Caerdydd a thu hwnt. Byddant yn gweithio gyda theuluoedd plant sydd â chyflyrau genetig heb ddiagnosis i dyfu eu rhwydweithiau cymorth. I ddechrau bydd hyn trwy gymuned ar-lein ond yna datblygu rhwydweithiau lleol pellach i wella gwybodaeth gwytnwch ac iechyd a lles emosiynol teuluoedd.

The aim of this England wide development project is to provide support for 3,500 families with children who have undiagnosed genetic conditions. Most of these children have physical and/or learning disabilities and many have severe and complex medical needs with as many as 50 per cent of children having genetic tests through the NHS not receiving a definite diagnosis for their condition.

This pilot project in six areas of England aims to develop information and support networks for families of children with undiagnosed genetic conditions. Parent and care volunteers will receive training to establish support groups and organise events to bring families together in a social setting. Volunteers will also speak to local clinics, health services and service providers about undiagnosed genetic conditions and their local network, to raise awareness and encourage referrals to the project.

The project will develop a hub for information and support, with a focus on mutual encouragement, offering families opportunities to share knowledge, experiences, difficulties and solutions. Families will be offered opportunities to share knowledge, experiences, difficulties and solutions through a newsletter, an annual meeting and by linking families for mutual support.
