There are too many young women using our services that have no idea that they are being exploited, this project seeks to find a way of reaching these females before it is too late. We regularly work with young people attending university in Canterbury and we know that this is a time when they take more risks, because for many it's the first time they are away from parents. We hope that everyone attending a workshop will be able to report improved knowledge of the signs of abusive relationships and High behaviours and that we prevent them from entering into an abusive relationship. The workshop will include strategies to avoid difficult situations and will enable young people to have the confidence to remove themselves from these situations, to make better choices and to keep themselves safe. By providing the workshop to a group, we are setting up a support network for our attendees, we hope they will support each other, but will also cascade the knowledge learnt to friends outside of the workshop. Some attendees may already be in an abusive relationship, so we will raise their awareness of the service provided by our TISVA, who can support them to leave the relationship and move towards prosecution (if appropriate). There is further support in the form of free specialist counselling available for young people at EKRCC, so the TISVA can refer to this service if appropriate.
