This two-year project continues to run a community cafe twice a week, offering a free meal, refreshments and therapeutic activities to local people who are unemployed and living on the Pennywell estate in Sunderland. Through attending the café residents meet and make links with others and can go on to access other activities run at the centre which is open 7 days per week, building peer support, a sense of belonging and tackling isolation. The Café improves community capacity by encouraging all residents to participate and contribute to community life. Once a month there is a social outing for café participants plus ten community events per year. The café is run by local volunteers and a participants steering group.
