During ....more Through BHAs HIV prevention activities across Leeds targeting black African communities, BHA have evidenced a lack of awareness of PrEP amongst women and men who identify as heterosexual. During 2017, BHA worked with Leeds Sexual Health, the Leeds sexual health clinic (LSH), to assess knowledge levels within African communities during the African Football Tournament. LSH presented the findings at the 2018 BASHH/BHIVA conference, where it won the best HIV oral presentation and was also reported by i-base (http://i-base.info/htb/34146). The research demonstrated that 81% of respondents had never heard of PrEP, however 60% of those surveyed said that they would be interested in taking PrEP if it was provided by the NHS, with half of those stating they would not use PrEP unless it was provided free. Unfortunately, neither BHA nor LSH have had the capacity to sustain any long term promotion of PrEP. We believe that this lack of awareness of PrEP will widen the equalities deficit within this group further.This project aims to ensure the sustainability of PrEP awareness activities in the long term. The project will recruit, train and support community health champions from African communities to be peer mentors and promote PrEP awareness. BHA will use their own evidence base and information from the Leeds GUMCAD data, to target those communities with higher STI and HIV incidence and which currently includes individuals from Zimbabwe, Sudan, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo. The project will be a collaboration between BHA's Leeds Skyline Project and Leeds Sexual Health. BHA have excellent working relationships with LSH and currently deliver outreach sessions for black African communities across Leeds to offer HIV and STI testing. This model has been very successful in expanding the offer and reach for marginalised communities and helped to build trust within communities of broader sexual health services. BHA also have established partnership working with the Leeds HIV clinic to provide an HIV positive peer mentor service and are currently delivering a pastors counselling programme where BHA have established clear protocols/good practice in recruiting, training and supporting community assets.
