St John's Winchester is an ancient charity formed sometime in the 1100's. We are one of Winchester's major providers of care to older people, and provide 82 almshouses for older people of limited means who live in the Winchester area or who have relatives here. We also operate a 31 bed care home for those living with dementia which also provides respite and day care centre .

2.1 THE OBJECTS OF THE CHARITY ARE FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT: (A) THE:(I) RELIEF OF POVERTY BY THE PROVISION OF, OR SUPPORTING THE PROVISION BY OTHERS OF, SOCIAL HOUSING IN THE FORM OF ALMSHOUSE ACCOMMODATION FOR THOSE IN NEED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ARTICLE 2.2;(II) RELIEF OF POVERTY OF PERSONS IN NEED, HARDSHIP AND DISTRESS LIVING IN THE CITY OF WINCHESTER AND ITS SURROUNDING AREA;(III) RELIEF AND CARE OF OLDER PEOPLE BY THE PROVISION, FOR THOSE IN NEED (WITH A PREFERENCE FOR RESIDENTS OF THE CHARITY), OF SPECIALLY DESIGNED OR ADAPTED HOUSING OR ACCOMMODATION AND ASSOCIATED SERVICES AND FACILITIES.(B) INSOFAR AS ADEQUATE PROVISION HAS BEEN MADE FOR THOSE RECEIVING HELP FROM THE CHARITY UNDER ARTICLE 2.1(A), THE DIRECTORS MAY RELIEVE THE NEEDS OF OLDER PEOPLE IN THE CITY OF WINCHESTER AND ITS SURROUNDING AREA BY PROVIDING ITEMS, SERVICES OR OTHER FACILITIES CALCULATED TO RELIEVE SUCH NEEDS. 2.2 THE DIRECTORS SHALL APPLY THE FOLLOWING ORDER OF PREFERENCE FOR SELECTING RESIDENTS FOR ALL THE ALMSHOUSES UNDER ARTICLE 2.1(A)(I):(A) INDIVIDUALS WHO LIVE IN THE CITY OF WINCHESTER;(B) INDIVIDUALS WHO LIVE OUTSIDE THE CITY OF WINCHESTER BUT WITHIN HAMPSHIRE;(C) INDIVIDUALS FROM OUTSIDE HAMPSHIRE WHO HAVE FAMILY LIVING IN THE CITY OF WINCHESTER.
