The funding will help to run run social welfare law work in the Pan Estate on the Isle of Wight. IOWLC is an independent registered charity offering specialist free social welfare advice and representation to residents and are the only organisation in the area that have a legal aid contract in social welfare law. They deliver a range of projects including Advocates Court Desk at the County Court a homeless prevention project and a home visiting support service to clients at risk of losing their home. They support 4500 clients annually and in 2018/19 stopped 65 evictions dealt with 286 repossession cases enabled £2.8million of debt to be written off and helped secure £385000 of benefits for vulnerable clients.

This existing project will offer volunteer placements within the Isle of Wight Law Centre to NEET young people aged 18-25, relating to the provision of legal advice to disadvantaged people in the community. The volunteers will attend staff meetings, help develop training courses and monitoring methods, mentor new volunteers and also act as advisors once they are properly trained. Young people will initially undergo a training course covering social welfare law, financial capability and equal opportunities.

This project based at HMP Camphill on the Isle of Wight, provides specialist housing advice to offenders with the aim of resolving housing problems, preventing homelessness and improving their overall health and welfare, while reducing re-offending. A specialist housing advisor will assist beneficiaries by resolving existing concerns relating to housing and accommodation. This will involve offering practical assistance with debt management, rent/mortgage arrears and eviction and repossession notices.
