KING'S COLLEGE LONDON Advance Choice Documents (ACDs) are statements of preferences for mental health care and treatment made when the service user has capacity to complete one together with their treating mental health professionals and others as desired, e.g. carers or advocates. Our aim is that by the end of this two-year project, tested ACD resources will be in use in SLaM adult and child and adolescent mental health services and available to other Trusts, leading to reduced racial inequalities in care access, experience and outcomes for Black people previously detained under the Mental Health Act, including rates of MHA detention. Three overarching proposals were submitted with additional options - we funded the largest proposal but omitted some of the optional extras.

SOUTH LONDON AND MAUDSLEY NHS FOUNDATION TRUST Medication is an effective strategy but maybe it might be better sometimes to use the patient’s own strengths and usual coping mechanisms to help them calm down. This initiative suggests a range of alternatives. Calm Down Methods and Sensory equipment are ways that can be used by patients to help lower their levels or arousal and agitation. When a patient is noticed to be tense and/or agitated, or showing other known indicators for them that they might become angry and aggressive, then these Calm Down Methods, in particular calm boxes, should be offered before considering medication.

CROYDON BME FORUM The young minds matter conference aims to address the stigma and misconceptions of mental health amongst children and young adults. Many young people display poor knowledge of mental health problems and negative attitudes towards people experiencing, or who have a history of mental health problems. However, from our work and the current research, we know that mental health problems affect around one in six children. Also, young people say they are often not taken seriously by adults when it comes to mental health. This causes many to feel uncomfortable to speak out about their worries, for fear of the consequences.

KING'S COLLEGE LONDON Body worn cameras allow NHS staff and patients on inpatient wards to request a situation to be filmed. KING'S COLLEGE LONDON In 25% of patients with psychosis, standard treatment with antipsychotic medication is ineffective. The only treatment that can help these patients is a medication called Clozapine. However, there is often a delay of several years before patients can access Clozapine treatment. Funding this project will enable clinicians at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London to evaluate a new approach designed to substantially reduce this delay, allowing patients to access effective treatment sooner. If successful, this approach is likely to change the way that people with ‘treatment resistant’ psychosis are treated.
