Programme outline:Supporting young people at risk of becoming NEET and young homeless people to access the green environment through a blend of outdoor education, conservation and environmental educationParticipants will be referred by local schools, colleges, pupil referral units and homelessness support organisations (including YMCA & Framework). The schools elements will be delivered during term-time (young people will primarily be those who are not in the usual school setting), with a separate holiday provision for homeless young people.The programmes are designed to provide knowledge and experience of outdoor activities and to develop life skills (primarily communication, self-esteem, team working and leadership) to improve self-confidence and future independence. Activities will include indoor/outdoor climbing, orienteering, mountain biking, canoeing/kayaking, hill walking, conservation and environmental education. Typically, this will include a physical activity in the morning followed by an environmental/conservation challenge in the afternoon such as mountain biking or hiking followed by improving plant diversity through planting and seed sowing, invasive species control, scything for grassland management, tree planting/ transplanting, habitat creation etcProgrammes will be managed by our team of experienced and qualified Outdoor Education and Environmental Education Specialists.

The project will support young homeless people from Mansfield with mental health conditions including anxiety/depression. The young people will develop resilient, transferable life skills through support from a behavioural psychologist and engaging in weekly outdoor sports activities. The grant will pay for the behavioural psychologist, coaching fees, a contribution to organisational overheads, direct project costs, equipment and an external evaluation. The project improve the young people’s mental health, increase their engagement and support them with transitions whilst also ensuring that the homeless accommodation becomes a more supportive psychologically informed environment.

The building work will focus on renovating existing rooms at the YMCA’s supported accommodation in Goole as well as a new adjacent house to provide transitional accommodation. The building houses young people that would otherwise be homeless, aged between 16-24 years of age. Whilst Goole YMCA has supported this vulnerable group for over 20 years, we have recently commissioned a new house to provide move-on accommodation for those that have developed the desired level of independent living skills. This new home needs substantial refurbishment, including improved security as well as new windows and doors. The new house will offer added features for young people to become more independent – whilst being separate to the hostel, it will continue to offer activities such as functional skills and other training required to live an independent life as well as empowering them to take the lead on establishing their home and moving on.
