LIBERTY CHOIR UK

The programme brings volunteers from the local community every week to sing in prison with residents. Upon release, Liberty Choir graduates are offered practical support, and friendship and are welcomed into the community choirs. The pandemic has isolated these people further with no visits and no education or activities. The majority of people in prisons are spending 23 hours in a cell. Engaging in music through song is evidenced to have a profound impact on learning, mental health and general well-being. To temporarily replace visits, Liberty Choir is producing a series of 60-minute radio programmes and accompanying learning resources. These will entertain, uplift, educate and connect to residents. To continue these as broadcasts, financial support is needed to cover costs of increased hours of staff, recording equipment and publishing resources.

THE OBJECTS OF THE CIO ARE:(1) THE PROMOTION OF THE REHABILITATION OF PRISONERS FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN PARTICULAR BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY BY SETTING UP CHOIRS IN PRISONS AS A MEANS TO BUILD THE SKILLS AND CAPACITY OF OFFENDERS SO THAT THEY CAN BREAK THE CYCLE OF RE-OFFENDING ON RELEASE.(2) TO PROMOTE SOCIAL INCLUSION FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT AMONGST PEOPLE WHO ARE SOCIALLY EXCLUDED THROUGH THE PROVISION OF A PROGRAMME OF HIGH-QUALITY SINGING DESIGNED TO HELP DEVELOP SKILLS AND SELF-CONFIDENCE WITH THE AIM OF ASSISTING THEM TO INTEGRATE INTO SOCIETY.FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLAUSE ‘SOCIALLY EXCLUDED’ MEANS BEING EXCLUDED FROM SOCIETY, OR PARTS OF SOCIETY, AS A RESULT OF ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING FACTORS: UNEMPLOYMENT; FINANCIAL HARDSHIP; YOUTH OR OLD AGE; ILL HEALTH (PHYSICAL OR MENTAL); SUBSTANCE ABUSE OR DEPENDENCY INCLUDING ALCOHOL AND DRUGS; POOR EDUCATIONAL OR SKILLS ATTAINMENT; RELATIONSHIP AND FAMILY BREAKDOWN; POOR HOUSING (THAT IS HOUSING THAT DOES NOT MEET BASIC HABITABLE STANDARDS; CRIME (EITHER AS A VICTIM OF CRIME OR AS AN OFFENDER REHABILITATING INTO SOCIETY).
